THE LAUNCH of Opterons for Socket 939 was obviously just a smoke in the mirror. The complete stock of Opterons model number 14x and 16x (dual-core) dissapeared from e-tailers and retailers, with hundreds of overclockers buying even six or eight CPU's at the same time. Reason: Opteron, a 1MB L2 cache processor was priced lower than Athlon 64 models with 512KB of L2 cache. Also, those Opteron babies were bad-boys when it comes to cooling, working at 2.7-2.9 GHz with air-cooling - at zero problems, with a lower operating temperature than default-clocked Pentium D 840.

This has come to a close, as we have received a document that goes to show that company has decided to stop production of several different SKU's.

Stopped items from AMD for Q4
SDA2500BXBOX
SDA3100BXBOX
ADA3000BPBOX
ADA3200BPBOX
ADA3500BPBOX
939pin Opterons

You can see that the company has stopped production of Sempr0n 2500+, 3100+ and Athlon 64 3000+, 3200+ and 3500+, all in Processor-In-Box (PIB) format. At the end of the list, all Opterons using Socket 939. Is this a preparation for early Socket M2 launch?

Glad I got my 170 a month ago ;)

it is a good decision if the amount of money they're making per part is miniscule at best. also, when you start blurring the lines betwen disparate market segments, you invariably lose margin and focus.

sounds like a good descisions to me, now people will have to pay alot more for the equivilent A64 parts and AMD makes more money. They decided to stop shipping them awhile ago, but im not sure when the move actually takes affect.

yes, i understand perfectly there reasons for doing it. i bet normal A64 sales have dropped ~30% in the last 2 months.

eh. not really. Enthuisast sales are probably a minuscule ammount of their total sales.

Exactly.

I think the reason AMD is making such a big deal about not selling Opty 939's to the general public is because their production capacity is stretched to the max as it is. If the Opterons are kicking ass in the workstation/server market, why do they want more of their production capacity used towards a very small segment of their market?

That and the lower priced thing of course ;)

Who has it in stock?

Monarch claims to have it in stock, but you should probably call first to verify that they actually have it. Price is about $40 more than it was several weeks ago when the rush started, but it's probably about as good as you're going to get unless you buy a used one on the forums or something. It's still a reasonable price, though no longer "hot".

They should have just kept the original pricing :| Lowering the price and then discontinuing them is awfully suspicious. I wonder what Tyan is going to tell people who have these, because unlike the S2866 this doesn't include regular Athlon 64s in the support list.

Definitely call Monarch. They don't update their inventory in realtime and will take their sweet time in letting you know its OOS.

I think two factors that haven't been discussed also may be at play. The upcoming M2 (which is already sampling in motherboards and even produced) and the endless Dell speculation. I saw somewhere that this may be the chip hoarding for Dell. Ah well, I love speculation while typing on my X2 :)

i think so dell dont want to be cuaght with its pants down if intel goes down in the lawsuit vs amd. so dell prob decided it was time to do it right, or offer more choices ( um eeeeeee) but either way i think it is from dell thats why i have a opty 939 144 with no mobo to put it cuz i think they are gone.

last video card I ordered from then a GT, they charged my card took a week "in warehouse" only to tell me after I called of course, the card was backordered. I doubt I'll ever place an order with them ever again... too much shade...maybe look someplace else.

Same exact thing happened with my order for a DFI Ultra-D and the Opty 170. Took me 2+ weeks to get my Opty because even though I called and got them to overnight my Opty when th DFI was backordered, it took them like another 3 days to get the damn CPU shipped out.

Oh, and I still haven't received a refund from them on the DFI :|

Hey Dave- do you know what processors are definetly going to be EOL and which ones we will be able to get yet for the foreseeable future?
