some of our 32-bit workstations choke on certain types of vector graphics files. it was suggested that 64-bit dual cpu/core might work out better... so i tried it out on a amd64 workstation and the machine didnt choke at all. So now im looking at who makes amd64 workstations and so far ive found that HP does... but they are opteron64s... im used to dealin g with these all the time in servers, but never a workstaion... so im not sure how well they perform for workstation applications like autocad, illustrator, etc.

thanks!

they have the same performance but generally have more cache, they run cooler and OC better if that matters to you

Yeah they have some LV version at a pretty penny.....check out moarch for some prebuilt systems unless you need all the background support....

AMDs are the current leader in most all CAD apps out there.....

Autocadd and the likes of many of Autodesk's programs can take advanatge of multple cores so maybe look at a 165-180 (in increments of 5)...They are dual core...

I see HUGE gains from rendering my 3d products...

Look at the ADT links and then at time remaining while in the 30th frame....ADT is architectrual desktop 2004 and uses the viz renderer which is identical to the rendering in 3dsmax6 & 7...

NO....I was more commenting on using multi or dual core platforms to further help....Many CAD (not all) are SMP aware and some pretty heavily in the rendering process...

I will be using winxp pro but as long as win64 is not ready for primetime (IMO) I wont be going there...i would like to try a LINUX dual boot though...

i run linux as my primary OS on my amd64 workstation at home and at work. 64-bit support is very mature on linux. the only irritating thing right now is the lack of flash support on linux/amd64. there are workarounds though.
