Opteron vs SD/Venice Mem Controller

I think my Venice's mem controller (RMA for ram is in progress to see if it was the ram or not) is crap. I might go ahead and buy a new CPU if this is the case. I was wondering, is there a difference between the Opteron and SD/Venice mem controller?
 
All three Venice, SD, and Opteron s939 are the same. Only difference is the L2 cache size. There may be a difference in the mem controller between E3 and E6 revisions, but I can't remember what that difference is... if any.
