Opteron Overclocking?

I've read that the Opteron is supposed to run quite cool; does this mean it will overclock well? Anyone have any experience with this? I'm kind of hoping the 240 model would overclock well🙂.

Overclocking these processors may prove to be difficult. As they have no front side bus from which they derive a CPU clock.

The current mobos seem to have a clock gen and multiplier just for the CPU itself.

Since Athlon 64s will also not have a traditional FSB, there should be some way to overclock the processors, right? I'd be surprised if AMD set out to stop overclocking on its processors entirely.

I'm sure there will be some way to adjust the clock gen used for the CPU. Its just that no Athlon64s are out right now and Opterons just appeared.

Give it some time, I'm sure someone will eventually get a A64/Opteron setup and try to overclock 😀

I would bet even if you could overclock an Opteron, it wouldn't do very well. Take it this way, why would AMD release their top end processor at 1.8GHz if they could release a 2GHz+ that would kill the Xeon? This is answered by saying that their manufacturing process and architecture are not yet up to par with what could be considered a very nice overclocking processor.

Remember ocers make a very small segment of the overall users...Don't look at the numbers in this forum and think it is indicative of the true state of amd users....AMD does not make marketing decisions on us ocers alone...

I to think they will be a workaround eventually.....BUt wait until athlon64 mobos arrive since the opteron is a business chip on business platforms, ocing options are usually not there anyawys...
