Opteron or Athlon 64?

Well, I just picked up a Opteron 146 (2.0Ghz) on a whim (being shipped right now), and I'm having second thoughts. I have a A64 3000+(1.8Ghz) that I've been running at 3800+ speed (2.4Ghz) for almost a year. Should I just return the Opteron and keep my A64? Please clarify your choice. Thanks!

I would have spent that $ on a better video card, not another single core CPU...

Although the Opteron should clock quite a bit higher and benefits from the extra cache it really won't be worth it in my opinion.

Hold out for when you can make a more significant upgrade.

Well, as you have the vid card on the way and you're overclocking ... good luck on the overclock ... ;) ... you should be able to get over 2.4 easy, it's likely you'll get 2.8 with the right stepping and cooling.

Do you guys think the performance gain would only be marginal, or would it be a big enough performance gain to justify the extra ~$50? (if I sell my A64)

I would keep the winnie. It was a good performance bargain when it was cheap, but since AMD raised the prices, it's not really worth it.

It's only an extra $50, you won't really feel the difference but you really didn't take much of a hit to get the upgrade.

Is your board capable of 300+ HTT? If so, Opteron. No doubt.
