Ive built more than a few systems but Im no expert really when it comes to CPU's. Especially in the last few years. I just havent kept up with them. And as far as AMD CPU's go Ive never really known too much about them until recently I was always an Intel man.

Anyway, somebody on here told me that I should get an Opteron. I have been told by other sources that Opterons are not as good as X2 CPU's for gaming. However, it seems to me that for overclocking, Opterons are the obvious choice. But on that same note, it seems like the Opterons are geared more towards servers, high-end CAD workstations and the like. NOT gaming.

I have never overclocked but will probably want to OC my CPU at some point. Originally I was going to go with the 4400+ X2 but then considered the Opteron 170. Now I'm just not sure.

My main goal with this new rig is to do some hardcore gaming. So what should I get the 4400+ X2 or the Opteron 170?

Thanks.

there are 2 types of opteron, socket 940, for servers, and socket 939, which are almost exactly the same as normal a64's. only difference is, the overclock way better.

I've got the 175 and with it and an evga 7800gt co I can now play fear at high settings. With my previous 3500 winnie and a xfx 6800gt that was not even close to being possible.
