Opteron CPU Temp

that 64 degrees C is a bit high for this processor.

Currently using Speedfan to detect temps. The processors are Opteron 250's @ .90 nm Troy core. They are using stock HSF since I didn't want to break my warranty yet. I'm thinking I will need to get new coolers cause the temp for CPU 1 is running too high. The CPU is running a 32p UT2k4 ONS server and sometimes peaks around 70% or more processor usage.

The mobo is a Tyan Tiger 2875 in a 2u case w/ 4 case fans running as fast as they can go.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm suspecting I will have to break warranty and get better coolers for this thing. Is this a good move?

Are you overclocking the CPU? If not, then the stock cooler should be fine. Take off the heatsink and put a fresh layer of Artic Silver 5 though. That will lower your temps a bit. Also, make sure that the heatsink is making good contact with the CPU.

No overclocking. CPU is stock speed @ ~2.4Ghz.

If your idle-load temperature swing is not too insane (if you idle at like 45C or something) then either your heatsink is seated improperly or your sensors are not accurate (though I'd expect sensors on a server board to be accurate). Try reseating your heatsink if possible. Also, changing the heatsink should not void your warranty at all, since AMD sells boxed CPU without a heatsink as well (or at least that's what AMD claims on its website).

speedfan doesnt report my temps right so maybe its the same with yours try a couple other programs everest?

I'm using the bigtyphoon on an Asus A8N32-SLI with an Opteron 170 and I idle at around 40 cesius it tells me..... Could it be wrong or is it running hot? I don't know if i got the heatsink on there hard enough.. I just didn't want to crack it. It's making full contact with the processor.

I guess what I'm really asking is, what SHOULD the load temp be for a stock Opteron 250 with a stock HSF?

It is quite possible on its trip to the DC that it could have gotten damaged and the HSF is somewhat out of kilter...
