Opteron 240 and 2x2400+ MPs

I just got these last week from AMD, and I'm trying to decide what the best configuration would be to build the boxes around these are. I don't need anything too fancy (I've got plenty of other hardware, such as 2 DVD-RW's, a DVD Duplicator, etc). Take a look at these two setups and see if this is about in line with what I should go ahead and get (cases aren't listed because I haven't looked at any yet for these, but I don't really need help with that).

Asus SK8N Motherboard (For the Opteron)
2x512MB PC3200 DDR RAM (Dual Channel ONLY)
2x80GB Sata Drives (for RAID testing)
Firewire 52x24x52 CD-RW (alternate CD-RW testing)
Floppy Drive
WinXP Pro License
Nanothrm Thermal Compound

Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P (for the Dual 2400+ MP)
2x512MB PC2100 ECC DDR RAM (ECC ONLY)
1 7200RPM 80GB HD
48X/24X/48X CD-Rewriteable/16xDVD-Rom EIDE Internal Combo Drive (32X,24X,16X,8X,4X)
Floppy Drive
WinXP Pro License

For the Opteron, you're going to need Registered ECC PC2700 such as this or they've got larger modules as well. From what I've read, the Opterons won't POST without R-ECC.

Can you perhaps give me some insight where you saw this, please? Just want to make sure I get the proper parts for it, and I guess at some point I missed the ECC requirement. 🙁

It says it right on the box... in addition, nearly all the reviews of the 2xx series Opetron have stated the requirement for ECC. Check gamepc.com out, I think that their review states this.

By the way, you can download a 180-day evaluation version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise from Microsoft if you want to save the cost of those WinXP licenses. You're allowed to use it on up to four computers at once, for 180 days, by the terms of the EULA. You can't put it to production uses (for example, I couldn't add it to our WinNT domain temporarily just to install Software Update Services and patch my Win2000 desktop systems with it, that's out-of-bounds).

Since the company is paying for the licenses, cost isn't a factor here. 🙂 I should probably get Eval versions anyway to start prelim testing for future game titles (as I'm sure our customer base will be using the OS).

Your best course of action would be to send that Opteron to me. I will give it a good home...

Now now...let's not get too greedy 😛

Still waiting on the 3200+, 3000+, and 2800+ they were going to send me and I'll be all set. 🙂
