I'm looking to upgrade my current socket 939 setup with a dual core processor.

I'm looking at either the Opteron 175 or the Athlon 64 X2 4400+.

Is there a reason that I should go with the Opteron over the X2? Should I save some bucks and go with the Opteron 170 instead?

Any input is appreciated.

Im considering the same thing Id also like to know from what ive been reading right now I have a 3700 and considering a dual core proc would not be such a great upgrade for gaming due to the code being for single proc. Someone set us straight please

Your answer is here: link. TSDible, there's absolutely no difference between the two processors you ask about, except overclocking ability. Well, average overclocking ability. And the newer 89 watt 4400's are overclocking extremely well, so there may not be any difference at all between them and the Opty 175.

my 89W 4400+ reached 2.795ghz at 1.37V. I am sure I could go higher with a better heatsink (i have the stock AMD 4 heatpipe cooler which is ~ to an XP-90).

It's significantly cheaper than the Opty 175 (or at least it WAS cheaper, don't know what the prices are like now as supplies start to drop), runs cooler, uses less power and overclocks VERY well on average. my own informal polling around anandtech and other sites seem to indicate that my results are about average for these 89W parts (maybe slightly above average). But the point is that you have a GREAT shot at 2.8+ on air with the 4400+ 89W, and if you get a bit lucky you will be able to go up to 3+ghz.

I've been unable to find the 89W part in stock anywhere...

Now I'm considering the Opty 170 as well.

Yep, stick with the 170, and put the saved $$$ towards a nice 120mm HS/Fan (quiet & cool), then overclock to 2.6 easily, or more if you really feel like it.

You made a right choice. I'd pick an Opteron over X2 any day.

Is the opteron 175 @ 2.2, oc'd to 2.4 going to be faster than my 3000 @ 2.4? I know that this is a good oc chip, but probably not worth the upgrade for a 0.6 increase, for me, unless I'm missing something??

You are definately missing something if you do any kind of multitasking, the Opty or any dual core will blow your 3000 away at 3 ghz much less 2.4. In all realyity you should have now problem getting an opteron to atleast 2.6+. I have an opteron 148 (single core) running at 2.75. My old opteron 165 would smoke my 148 and all I got out of the 165 was 2.6. I am probably wrong in the statement but I look at it like 2.6x2 equals 5.2. I know its not a reality but it is definately an upgrade well worth the $. Just my .02

Why? (Genuinely out of interest)

In general the Opterons OC better, especially on stock voltage.

I haven't had a chance to tune it yet really. Hit 2.4 right away on air using my ZALMAN CNPS7700-ALCU.

I'm happy even with that. I think I'm going to have to start doing some tweaking to get higher.

Do you guys think I should stick with this cooler, or go to the stock one? I didn't want to pull the motherboard, so I started here.
