opteron 170...

I've got xp pro sp2 with all updates and no I did not have to install anything as windows automatically recognized the dual core and installed the multiprocessor acpi.

ok maybe I a mwrong but if it seems most need them to game etc

please correct me if I am wrong as I installed them with my opteron

I dont think they will hurt anything. I will probably get aroung to installing them eventually. They do solve some gaming issues, but it is not required to install them to get a dual core cpu working.

I installed an Opteron 165 on My MSI K8T Neo2-F v1.0 MS-6702E motherboard(Via K8T800 Pro chipset) and I have not only the MS patch, But the AMD X2 driver and I still can't access the 2nd core at all under XP Pro sp2. Bios is 9.2 of course and It is the latest official Bios, There is a 9.3 beta from Germany, But It doesn't offer any new support as It's just a fix for something not cpu related. I wish AMD would lift It's ban on Opteron s939 CPU support on motherboard makers. Of course for a 1.8GHz cpu this thing not only runs cool, But flat out runs, It's at 2.81GHz!
