Opteron 170

I am guessing the gouging on these is about to stop..looks like AMD came out and said they are not discontinuing any of them and they will still be shipping..albeit ?? only to makes of servers/workstation..but these gus can still sell them to anyone(I guess unless AMD demands they do not???)
 
Is there any disadvantage to running an Opteron in a desktop PC? It seems as though this is the equivalent of the 3800+ but with twice the cache, but other than that are they essentially the same? Or would the X2 be better suited to desktop tasks and the Opteron be better suited for stuff like SQL, etc.?

There is no disadvantage. If the prices are roughly equal, get the Opteron. However, the extra cache for most desktop applications will not produce tangible benefits.
