Here's where AMD apparently has a clear advantage over Intel. My Opteron 170@240FSB scores ALU 23689 MIPS.
That's better than a Pentium 4-XE (22667 MIPS) or Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (23520 MIPS).
So if you are doing something that relies heavily on computation it seems that dual Opterons are the best way to go.
In the multimedia tests in Sandra, the 4-XE is still tops overall, but the Opteron still ranks right up there in the top 4.
