I can not decide whether to go for 10x multiplier

I realize the bestter steppings maybe gone

is it worth OEM 170 vs retail 165

I would like to get 2600+ since my venice is 2750 right now

also when testing Prime 95 you should run dual prime at same time correct?

is max vcore around 1.55v on these chips

What prices are you seeing for each?

Yes, you run 2 instances of prime.

Max Vcore - from what I have read I would NOT go that high with a Dual core chip. I think safe is 1.4x volts. Also depends a lot on your cooling.

opteron 165 retail $340 and if I go with a combo ASRock(for my wife's machine) $70+ opteron $369..I probably would get ASrock in either case

My wife has a Abit IT7Max 2 rev2 P4 2.4B@2.9....I will palce one of my 3200's in it and then place the opteron in my DFI SLI-DR

cooling would be an XP90 or a new SI 120

It all come down to Price, but still i would get Opteron 165, and buy an expensive motherboard like DFI Lan Party Ultra D or MSI Noe4 PLatinum SLI.

What would worry me is that the current Opterons may not be as overclockable as earlier ones. I was lucky and got a 170 week 0530, but even so it only does 2.7GHz on low volts. Other people are having difficulty getting over 2.4GHz with later chips. Have a look thru this thread.

I also just ordered a 165 from monarch as soon as I saw the news at the anandtech main page. Overpaid by 40 bucks but ohh well I still think it will be worth it. Its going into a brand new custom watercooled system so I am pretty sure I will still be able to hit at least 3.0 on it stable. Im just wondering about ram though, cant decide whether to get a pair of OCZ gold VX or Plat rev 2. The gold is actually cheaper right now on newegg. Going to be getting a DFI NF4 Ultra-D mobo for the setup.

I did not read the entire thread..my I do not see alot info on later chips not hitting 2.4GHZ....some are having trouble

0543 TPMWs are doing an easy 2.6 - 2.7

all the ones i've sold have hit around that area. not quite as good (per se) as the 0530s, but not bad at all.

I'm voting for OEM 165. The average overclocked speeds are between 2.6GHz~2.7GHz, same as that of 170, but you pay less with 165.
Does it bother you that much runing 2.75GHz on your current system? Could you share the reasons why you like to upgrade.

thanks

From what I have read some (read some) of those people who couldnt get to 2.4 it wasnt because of the chip. Overclocking isnt rocket science but I think experience and talent plays a factor in it as well.

Well you have a DFI MB so you can probably get higher HTT than I can. You could still get good clocks with the 9x multiplier on the 165.

I, on the other hand would probably want the 10x multi of the 170 because I probably can't reach the same HTT as you.

Thats how I'm looking at it, but then again I could have it all wrong..

I'm with oc on this...why would you dump your vinice when it's running at that speed? Due you do alot of work that is multi threaded? Maybe it's me, but I just can't see the need for a dual core...not yet anyway. I would like to play with one, but at the current prices I would have to pass. Anyway, I'm curious also.

At these prices, get a 165

I got a 170 when it was $356. At these prices if I had to do again I'd get a 165

Hopefully yours will do better than mine. Super high volts needed for 2.6, even higher for 2.7 and I'm not sure its stable. Running 2.5 for comfort :)

You must have bought exactly when I did. Paid 356 myself and can't get past 2.5 stable no matter what volts. But I run 2.5 @ stock volts! Go figure.

I'd just go for whatever you can get the best deal on

2.6-2.7 on a 165 is an excellent oc and not the average....I see alot of people on net only get 2.4-2.5...nothing to sneeze about

OC is always luck of the draw...my 165 will do 2610 but not 2650/2700 and this is at 1.46 vcore...any more and still stops on dual prime

Same here too! I had a 165 @ 2.4 and picked up my current 170 which is very stable at 2.5Ghz. My Asus board limits overvolt to 1.4v + .07 and that is not enough for 2.6 stable.

Only way I would choose a 165 is if you can confrim your board cando @ least 300HTT..

If not get the 170 and higher multiplier.
