I have the possibility of maybe getting an opteron 165. Pretty much I have 2 steppings to choose from right now.

CCBBE 0617FPMW
CCBWE 0604TPMW

For air (then water later) which OC's the best? Or, is there a different stepping I should look out for? I am not going to do phase so coldbugs don't matter to me at all.

I've heard that some steppings OC well but get really hot, I'd prefer to find one that even if it doesn't OC quite as well but stays alot cooler. Don't know if this is true or not.

Thanks! :)

By the way, don't tell me to go C2D because I won't ;) I'm just looking to extend the life of my s939 system for now.

I don't know much about those specific ones, but the BBs (and B1s) are better than BWs as a general rule.

Id say get the 0617, ive heard that some of the 0604's are the worst possible 165 you can get; topping out at like 2.6 with good cooling and volts.

There was another one that was supposed to be just as good, CCB1E 0608MPMW. That was many months ago though. I doubt either of them are still in circulation.

Yup. I had one that easily did 3.0GHz on air. Among what OP listed, I'd pick the CCBBE stepping one. I think I have the exact same stepping, and it does 2.80GHz with stock (auto) voltage and stock HSF. No matter what I do it won't do 3.0GHz, though. I didn't test for long because the CPU is for my work machine but the max I could do was somewhere around 2.95GHz.

can someone tell me what steppings are? I was planning to get a gaming pc that is not too expensive and I came across a system with the opteron 165. Is the opteron 165 around teh same kind of level as x2s and c2ds?

165 and X2 are equivalent in terms of performance assuming same clockspeed.

the c2d is a bit better (understatement possibly) than the opterons/x2's in performance given the two at the same clockspeed (i.e. c2d and x2 both at 2.8 ghz).

I reached 2.7ghz on air / stock volts with a LCB9E 646RPMW may go higher but would need better cooling that AMD Heatpipe Heatsink

Go for the CCBBE one. CCBWE's are a hit-n-miss from what is reported Here at XS

I got the CCBBE 0617FPMW and it is at 2.81GHz @ stock volts right now. I need better cooling to go higher though, my zalman is pretty much maxed out.

I'd have to double check, but I'm pretty sure I have a CCBBE. It does 2.7 without a sweat. I'm sure I can get more out of it, but 300x9 runs very cool (mid 40's with both cores loaded, granted it's in a cool room) and performs fine as is.

I have an CCBBE 0617FPMW and doing 2.8 at the moment. It can go higher, but need more volts and too much heat on my stock HSF.
