I hope this is in the right area, I have got my Opty 165 stable but it seems that there is an issue somewhere. The reason I purchased the dual core is so I am able to multitask but. I feel that my old Bartonxp3200 was executing winrar, par and so forth without slowing my response time downon my system. This is,from my understanding the purpose of a dual core, to be able to do several things at once. I cant even get several instances of winrar going at once without them all coming to a crawl.
To give you a little background on my sytem, that are not in my sig, I have a divider 5/6 and timing loosened to 8,3,3,3 which are by default 5, 2, 2.5, 2. Do you guys believe that this is the cause of my woes? I've read that dividers didnt play a major role but...
Any and all help is appreciated, Thanks in advance

Well, at that point I think your bottleneck will be your hard drive. Just think, all those instances of WinRar are going to be fighting for the hard drive. Best bet would be to grab 7-Zip, the latest beta, which supports multi-threading/processing. That would give you much more benefit that running multiple instances of WinRar.

Please also check your task manager to see if 2 CPU graphs are showing up and see if they are BOTH being used under testing. I believe there is a patch for XP-SP2 which helps Dual-Core performance.

Exactly. Your main bottleneck is the HD, thats why I think either NCQ with high density HDs or a raptor is needed.

Gets me wondering, would Raid 0 help in this situation? I know in the past that Raid 0 did not show any noticable gains, but with Dual core, it may be worth taking another look at.

Thanks for the quick replies, If you will notice I have a samsung sata 2 ncq hardrive, I will definately look into 7-zip. So you guys feel that my oc is not causing the issue?
That would definatley make me happy, I am just at a loss right now, I want my 2600, and usenet working at excellent speeds, Thanks again and I hope others have some imput

Add another HD, not raid0. Have one doing something on one drive, and the other instance working on the other drive. For three instances, add another HD and repeat !

Yeah, your issue is not the CPU or RAM, it's teh HDD.

I tried your advice guys and placed one rar file on 1 hdd and another on 2 hdd, the 2 hdd is eide and it out performed the sata2 hcq, Now I am Truly lost, What could be causing this to happen?

ncq sometimes isn't faster. An SATA and IDE are almost the same speed anyway. What are the differences , times ?

Well after taking the advice of enroscado and you guys here i did some testing and it seems that my eide is out performing my sata II, after doing a test my theoretical for sataII was 300, the burst was 129.5 and the sustained was 59.5, compared to my eide 133 burst of 108.3 sustained 56.7, i know it isnt truly out performing but there has to be something wrong, I have looked around for different drivers and the "tool" to make the sataII enabled but from the looks of it it is already enabled just not performing, please assist me with this matter if at all possible

If you want to run multiple winRAR's at once, then run it on multiple hard drives. Just like CPU's, hard drives bog down if you're trying to do multiple operations like this on a single disc.

raid 0 with a hardware raid card is probably your best bet. I have a raid 0 with a intel 3.0c and I can winrar a few things at once, par a few files and my system is not noticeably slower. just a tab bit but I can still do stuff like listen to mp3, surf the internet, light stuff, watch a divx movie, even tried playing a little game, but the performance hit was really noticeable at that point..etc etc. I am running raid 0 with two sata drives.

I appreciate the info, I will give it a try as soon as I can get another drive, it must be the same drive, correct?

You might also want to try the windows dual-core hotfix. Can't hurt. Search for a thread on it in here somewhere.

yup the HDD is going to be a bottle neck. having multiple HDDs will be better IF the file you winRAR are on different disks too. If you have two HDDs but both files your compressing are on the same disk, it won't matter.

also, make sure your mobo has the bios to use the 2 cores of the opteron 165. I've heard some of them don't have the bios YET to make full dual core operation possible. check with windows task manager if you have 2 cores running and make sure both are being loaded.

i was going to say update your sata drivers in windows (i had a similar problem like that, separate hdd) but your burst and sustain rates seem about right

I recently lowered my voltage, and WOW! my whole machine seems faster.

Isnt that odd?
