I have been researching processors for about 2 weeks now and I can't any sites that offer reviews, benchmarks, and or testing of Opteron 165 - 175 series vs X2 4200 - 4800. My main goal of my new PC is High End Gaming but @ the same time multi-tasking.

I play many online games where I can play 2 characters @ the same time which means 2 seperate programs of WoW or EQ etc. Right now I am geared more towards the opterons because I do plan on OC'ing it to its max performance. I can't find a single review that pairs the opteron with any kind of Gaming benchmarks or testing any FPS. Let alone one that compares those benchmarks and FPS's to the X2 4200 - 4800 which is ultimately what I am looking for.

Even if you don't have a link to a review, benchmark, or FPS testing of any kind, please post your ideas if you have any knowledge of the difference between the 2, strictly on a gaming perspective. I know the specs of both and I am not looking for a discussion based on anything except which is better for gaming.

Thanks in advance, Serp

I have seen reviews comparing both, but i really don't remember where.

Here's the order of performance, lowest to highest.

Opteron = Athlon 64 X2 if the speed & L2 cache is the same.

Opteron 165 1.8 GHz 2x1 MB L2
A64 X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz 2x512 KB L2
Opteron 170 2.0 GHz 2x1 MB L2
A64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz 2x512 KB L2
Opteron 175 = A64 X2 4400+ (both are 2.2 GHz 2x1 MB L2)
A64 X2 4600+ 2.4 GHz 2x512 KB L2
Opteron 180 = A64 X2 4800+ (both are 2.4 GHz 2x1 MB L2)

Yep. Its the same exact core, just varying clocks and cache. Generally, +200MHz clock > +512KB Cache.

I would say go with an opteron 165 or 170. They can OC to be an FX-60 quite easily (or at the very least above an X2 4800+). Ive never overclocked in my life before my current rig, and my 170 is running at 2.667GHz Dual Prime Stable on Stock Vcore.

Then its up to you to decide if you want a 9x or 10x multiplier. I picked the 10x, because im an engineer, and well, I just like having a processor run 10x the FSB, its more symmetrical. Worth the 80 bucks for my sanity, lol.
