received today-

another retail 148 CABYE 0540FPBW reporting in. I'll have to wait on the overclocking though as I currently do not have a case. I'll probably pick up a P180 over break and then give results.

My CABYE 0540 runs at Stock voltage at 2914MHz and I am perfectly happy with that, eye popping and jaw dropping processors I just got another, putting it away to see how all this Opteron availability will work out. By far this is the best single core processor I have owned.

CABYE 0540 FPBW

 w00t! I'm glad I started this thread! Thanks for the help guys! I probably would have ordered OEM if it weren't for some of the first couple of posts. I'm not going to be greedy; I'll probably just shoot for 11 x 250 = 2.750 since I'm a complete noobie overclocker.

So, is FPBW a good stepping? I know that the 0540 part is good, but what does the FPBW mean?

Welcome to Club Optero(w)n(age)

Snapper, CABYE 0540FPBW is one of the best (if not THE best) steppings. You're in a good shape!

man, these things are making me a little jealous. I'm going to have to turn up the volts on my x2, see if I can get 2.7+ out of it.

 Went through 6 to get my 2 CABYE's. The other 4 were sold or rma'd. Sure didn't get into this hobby to make money;)

Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on an opty 148 (considering what's going on with the pricing of E3 Athlon 64). What's my best bet now for a good stepping? OEM or retail, NewEgg or Monarch? I will probably be ordering on Mon, 12/19.

Personally, I haven't had good luck getting a cabye from Monarch, though it seems everyone else and their grandmother seems to get cabye's from them. Both OEM and retail have been cab2e's for me. I'm pretty certain that the current batch of oem's are all cab2e's. The retails have been a mix of cabye's and cab2e's. My oem from the egg was a cabye (just got it yesterday!). I've also heard good luck on retails from Mwave.
My advice would be to go retail from mwave or oem/retail from the egg.

Good luck:D

Just got my Opty 148 OEM chip in today, and I've been playing with it. So far, I'm still at stock and priming very well at 2.8ghz!

My chip is a CABYE 0542 FPMW. I've never heard of 0542, but I recalled the 0540 CABYE's were outstanding, so we'll see. So far, this one is doing better than any of my other Opty's I've tried.

Go to this link they have some information on the CABYE 0540, 0543 steppings. Looks like the 0543 may be better than the 0540. I saw 1.4V running @ 3102MHz with CABYE 0543 setpping.

Hehe.. I just checked the screenshots and noticed that the person is just using a small trick of CPU-Z bug. Sometimes CPU-Z reports wrong VCore. (notably as 1.400V) If you look closely the MBM shows 1.58VCore.

well I bit the bullett and bought one to and I have an X2 3800+ lol that does 2.6

Looks like I got a great stepping CABYE 0542 FPMW. I am just gonna go for 11x250 = 2750 to start then I will drop the mem to 166 and shoot for 10x300

Running a BFG NF4 Ultra. Gonna be interesting to see how much the extra clock speed offers over my 3800 at 2.5 to 2.6 dual core.

Will post back

I kind of wonder if I screwed the pooch with this purchase now. I paid $234 for an Opteron 148 which i a CABYE 0540 FPBW, a reportedly good stepping, but now the Opteron 165's are back in stock and even went for as low as $280. They also come with a nice heatpipe heatsink, which would save some money over having to buy one for the 148.

So, did I screw the pooch or do you think I'll be happier with my 148?

You can go either way. If it's for your main rig I'd suggest a dual-core. If it's for your second rig or just to fool around with OC'ing, definitely the 148 since that stepping will most definitely hit 3GHz.

It's for my main rig. Oh well. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time (end of November) during the Opteron rush when we all thought we were seeing the last of the Opterons (when the 146's were gone and when the 165's were $350).
