Yeah.. what's the difference.. except for the HUGE price difference that is?

They both work in the same boards, right? The 148 is just a few bucks more expensive than the 3400? now!

One big difference is that the Opteron requires ECC memory.....also, the FX has a dual-channel memory controller built on-die...otherwise the chips are the same, yes...

BTW, using ECC memory is great for stability, but it does slow down memory performance, thus slowing the system down somewhat compared to the FX-51

Edit: See Zombiejesus's thread....it asks basically the same thing...

Thanx for yoru reply.. but I think you are wrong. The FX 51 and 53 are also socket 940 and also requires ECC.. and teh opteron also has on die memory controller.

I'm not sure there is a difference. Opteron has dual memory controllers and requires ECC just like the FX-51. I think just the branding is different.

That'll change at the begining of next month when the Socket 939 Athlons 64s are introduced that don't require ECC.

IIRC, the FX and Opteron BOTH have dual channel memory controller and REQUIRE Registered RAM, however, the Opteron REQUIRES ECC, wheras the FX does not (although is compatible).
