Opteron 146 (at 2.45 GHz) with Prime95 (for several hours) at ~63 Deg C....okay for long term use?

Do you think running at this high of a temp will cause the processor to burn out prematurely? Voltage is set to standard for the CPU at 1.4V.

If the room is quite warm, then the temps seem to be alright, given the ambient temp is going to drive the CPU temp higher. How long did you run prime? I wouldn't except anything less then a dual instance run of large FFT's for at least 12 hours before I would consider it stable. If you start to get random lockups, BSODs, then you will know the processor is overheating. Other then that, I would try to get the room temperature down, and you should see a nice drop in CPU temp.

I don't know anything about your test settings above. I've always just run the "torture test" without checking out the various settings. I have the freeware version of Prime95 and am running it right now. After it runs for a few more hours...I'll look around Prime95 and see if I can figure out where your recommended settings are.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hmmm...my system temp is 36C (and CPU 36C under normal use), 6C less than you and under load my machine goes as high as 47C (Opteron 146 @ 2.4 - 240HTT*10). That's with the stock heatsink/stock voltage/stock TIM.

It's a difficult correlation, as the ambient temp increases the load temp will increase more - 6C ambient ~= 15C Load - seems about right to me, maybe a little high...I believe these chips are rated to 71C, but I wouldn't want to get much above where you are if it was my chip...

The ambient room temperature is ~90 deg. (F that is;) and I've also got stock cooling. Also, what "load" do you test under? Prime95?

Prime95 version 24.14. Just ran Torture test from the Options menu with no other changes to the software after installation.

That EVGA MB is terrible w/ temperature readings -- Mine reads about 12+ degrees too high!

The PC I'm speaking of is NOT the one in my signature. I just built another rig with an ABIT AN8 SLI and am running it through its paces. I think I'll keep this PC clocked at 2.45 GHz cause I don't imagine the temps will get any higher. I may even move this PC to another room in the house which gets more AC flow.

the server chips are intended to survive tough conditions... if u don't go over 80c, and don't overvolt, then the chip should be fine... if voltage is stock then oc'ing it to the point of crashing should not be an issue...

Perhaps your temp readings are off (i.e., the cpu is actually running hotter than indicated), or your cpu is more sensative to temperature, or the instability is due to some other system component?

I dunno...my PC seems to be pretty stable at the indicated temps so I'm not worried about my PC. The default "warning" temp for my ABIT AN8 is 75 deg. C. and the shutoff is 85 deg. C. Not that I'd want my cpu running that hot;)

If your room temps really are 90F (good god, are you running the PC outside in the Texas summer heat or something? :p), then 63C isn't at all surprising. I ran my old XP at load temps like that for quite a while and never had any problems, but then again, I paid like $50 for that chip and not $350 like I did for my Opty...

If it's stable though (Prime and all), I guess you don't have too much to worry about. Any warmer than that and I'd look into air conditioning for the computer's sake :p

LOL...I live in a colonial in metro Detroit, MI and they are INFAMOUS for being hot upstairs during the summer and cold in the winter. It was 92 deg. F today so I'll bet my office was close to 100 deg. F.

I brought the PC into the basement earlier tonight and the idle temp was 25 deg C. About 18 deg. C. cooler than upstairs in our home office. I actaully have a portable AC unit I bought last summer but I have to cut a hole in the ceiling in the closet to vent the thing. It would be nice to have it up and running. Yet another "home project" to do;)
