If you clock an opteron 146 up to speeds of 2.8mhz, is it technically the same processor as an FX-57 then?

no and yes

146 = 10 x 280

vs.

57 = 14 x 200

HTT is faster on the 146. so bandwidth intensive programs would see the 146 as being faster.

any program that is based on pure clocks would see each as being equal.

Thanks.

So why would anyone buy an FX? I purchased a 146 opteron for $170 that does 2.8ghz+. Thats a quarter of the cost of the FX-57.

The FX chips can clock way higher than 2.8ghz

1. people are afraid of overclocking

2. cooling issues

3. not every chip is guaranteed to overclock to FX-57 speeds...

My opty 146 @ 2.8 scores better in Sandra than an FX-57, if synthetic benchmarks are to be believed.

Here's a question, why get an FX-57 over a FX-55 (or any other FX, socket not withstanding)? (apart from the FX-57 POSSIBLY being rated for higher speeds)

HTT matters naught, at least until you start going lower than 500 (after multiplier) or so. IIRC.

FX-57 is a better process so it is cooler and more likely to go faster (and I think it has sse3 while the 55 does not)

I think something to consider is that you can take your FX57 chip and run it with any multiplier you choose.

ie 255x11 for 2805 MHz

That will negate the memory bandwidth difference for the most part.

The FX57 should be binned a little higher and probably will have a better memory controller. Is it worth the cost though??? Not in my opinion.

I have a 146 opteron at 2.8Ghz at 1.43v runs greats, the memory bandwidth is not always higher on the overclocked part. I have my ram running at 200mhz with a divider even tho i'm at 280x10. My memory scores are slightly lower cause its not running sync. im hitting 5700-5800. instead of 5900-6000. in Sisoft. but no complaints here :p
