Well, we've only got 6 of the 144's on order, I think 2 have already been gobbled up by pre-orders. Supposedly, they will be shipping to us any day now, but I'm not holding my breath; anyone familiar with our X2 4400's pre-order fiasco will understand that! Our distributor's in-stock dates are FAAAAR from reliable :)

I can order a few more of the 144's if demand requires. I imagine it will, but I'm trying to play it conservative, due to the 3800 situation right now and all.

Here, here and here.
Found the links by Froogle. Never heard of the sellers though.

I've heard one of those sellers is pretty good though ;)

On a serious note, we don't have an ETA on these yet, but holy cow are they popular!

If I were to order now, would I be able to get a processor out of the first shipment?

Edit: saw your recent post.. so if I preorder now I can be guarenteed one of the first? :p

Poor guy is going to be swamped with requests now :p. The Venice isn't that bad you know - sure it tops out prolly about 200MHz less and has half the cache, but its not a dog :)

Yes, you would. There is a big change to our pre-orders now though. Anyone who was fimiliar with our X2 preorders knew we did not bill until shipment. Well, we found out that we were getting absolutely KILLED because of that. Long story short, if we authorize a charge one day, but don't actually bill it within 48 hours, our fees *double* for the transaction, because we are actually violating some rules from Visa/MC. So, we have to bill when you purchase now, unfortunately (which explains why all the other retailers do the same; we don't have any choice).

However, we do have a loophole so to speak... and that is if you place an order now, we'll use that to keep your spot. However, we just VOID that transaction. When the chips come in, we notify you, and you have to place a 2nd order. We then cancel the first, and use the new one, with the brand new CC info, to bill you. This allows us to defer billing until the ship date, but requires customers to place 2 orders. It's a bit of a pain, but it's the only way we can offer deferred billing for you guys. The other option is just to order and let us bill you right away; whichever people prefer.

Yeah I saw that. You'd be getting them within the next 10 days or so wouldn't you? It's great you're so upfront about your policy change, and I understand as a small business it is hard to have a lot of capital to take a ton of preorders that might eventually fall through etc.:)

Mmm... can't wait for my 144. Got my board up to 320 stable with ram divider (shame my ram is so weak... but what can you do with 2x1gig?). Cpu stuck here. Gonna drop multi and try for 340+ when I reboot.

Ah well, having pre-orders fall through isn't usually a huge deal. We buy a fair amount of our stuff with a 30 day line of credit, so it's not really that we front tons right away. However, getting stuck with unsold inventory is the issue, that's where cancelled pre-orders hurt :)

I checked my order status, and it's giving another estimated ship date of 10/10/05. However, I wouldn't even bet a tarnished penny on that date. They could ship to us today, or in March of 2074. :D

has anyone seen if overclocking the dual core 939 165, 170, or 175 is any better than the X2s? can't find anything on that.

Any reviews on the Opteron 144/146 yet?
Is their performance greater than or equal to the Venices in gaming and overall?
Is it wise to buy this even though I'm not using it for a server? (just for some hardcore gaming and perhaps encoding)

I just might switch my mind from a 3000/3200 Venice to an Opteron 144/146 if the Opterons are better...

The socket 939 Opterons are San Diegos, meaning that they are basically venices with an extra 512k of cache.

From the little I've read of them (mostly at Xtremesystems), they overclock very well at stock voltage but raising the voltage doesnt help much, if at all. Also, they run quite hot at higher clock speeds, even using stock voltage.

I just pre-ordered one of those opti 144 from the great "Tank Guyz". Tank guy, any chance I would be one of the first ones to get my hands on your first batch of shipment? ;)

It's just going to depend on how our distributor ships them out to us. We keep ordering more to keep up with the pre-orders. Since you just ordered, you're pretty far back in line, but I'm guessing most should arrive at the same time. I just don't know, and won't really know until I get shipment notifications though :)

No one has answered the OP's question. Will these new 939 Opterons work in regular 939 mobos? For instance, I plan on using Opteron 144s in Biostar TFORCE6100-939 motherboards for a new computational cluster at work. However, Biostar support has no idea if this board will even POST with the new Opteron, and they will not test it because AMD doesn't send them server chips to test since they only sell PC mobos.

Has anyone put one of these 939 Opterons in a motherboard that didn't have a special BIOS flash just for this processor and have it work properly?

Its all going to depend on the BIOS. Check to see for some updates for your board. If nothings there then send a email. Its only a few lines they need to put in to make it work. Even without a functioning ID the BIOS will more or less "guess" what processor it is (I could be grossly incorrect with this...) As people have said its a San Diego Core, which is in the X2s, which that board supports, so It should work fine :)
