I thought it was great that she gave away cars to people who needed them. Then I heard that she didn't pay a nickel for them that it was GM who paid 7 million for the advertising stunt.
Shame on Oprah.

hmm. did she mention anything on the show about GM actually footing the bill for this? or did she take the credit herself?

well, GM has to get rid of some pontiac's somehow. chances are they'll do some fancy bookkeeping and it will look like sales are through the roof this quarter.

am I the only one who assumed this fact from the beginning?

She's worth about a billion so I thought it was nice of her to provide cars for the needy. Then you find out that GM forked out 7 million for 276 Pontiacs.
I wonder how much of the other crap she has been giving away is really paid by her because people always say how generous she is and now it appears to be hype.
1 year of Petrol would be a nice gift as well as the insurance required.

Maybe she can redeem herself by supplying the GAS for all those cars for the next year or so?![]()

First, a point of correction. GM didn't pay $7 million for the cars. That's how much they are worth. Their cost is probably under $5 million (might be well under that, but it's anyone's guess how much they cost to manufacture).
Second, NOBODY lost out in this promo.
1)Oprah boosted her ratings and got TONS of free publicity for her show (not only in her target demographic, either), for FREE.
2)GM bought an unprecedented amount of advertisement time on the biggest talk show on TV. Oprah spent the entire episode on the giveaway, touring the cars in the parking lot, going to the plant, etc. Believe me, Oprah pimped the Pontiac G6 unlike any commercial.
3)Instead of doing a simple giveaway, GM gave their cars to people who NEEDED them, thus improving their customer relations.
