Oprah Sucks

I thought it was great that she gave away cars to people who needed them. Then I heard that she didn't pay a nickel for them that it was GM who paid 7 million for the advertising stunt.

Shame on Oprah.

😕

Oprah sucks, yes. But to make this the reason why she sucks when there are so many better reasons is quite confusing to me.

Shame on Oprah.

GM said giving away cars on Oprah was worth it for them for advertising benefits.

Oprah did a good thing.

If you don't believe a person is good by helping out 250+ people in need, you need to go outside more.

I'm pretty sure you haven't come close to doing anything like that.

hmm. did she mention anything on the show about GM actually footing the bill for this? or did she take the credit herself?

She never took credit. It worked out well for all parties involved... 250+ people got cars, GM got some advertising on the new car, and Oprah boosted ratings.

Why would´nt she take credit? It´s not like they would´ve given 250 cars to Dr Phils show.

well, GM has to get rid of some pontiac's somehow. chances are they'll do some fancy bookkeeping and it will look like sales are through the roof this quarter.

really? 250 cars will send sales through the roof?

She's worth about a billion so I thought it was nice of her to provide cars for the needy. Then you find out that GM forked out 7 million for 276 Pontiacs.

I wonder how much of the other crap she has been giving away is really paid by her because people always say how generous she is and now it appears to be hype.

1 year of Petrol would be a nice gift as well as the insurance required.

am I the only one who assumed this fact from the beginning?

no, it was mentioned in the original aritcle that pontiac donated them. people here just don't read.

Would these people have gotten these cars if it wasn't for Oprah? Regardless of who footed the bill, they got free cars. It's not like GM was just going to give away cars to random people on the street, or they were going to any show and Oprah was the only one that accepted.

"Oprah, yes this is the CEO of GM. We want to give away some cars, but The Tony Danza Show turned us down, you want them?"

IT was in all the stories I read that GM Provided the cars. And they are paying for the taxes too. Funny think is I figured that was the case even before I read it... Compared to 1 30s spot during superbowl or the lasting effects this move has (you'll be hearing about it in follow-up stories for a while) I'm sure it was a wise move by GM's Marketing Dept.

Now if they'd just build better / nicer cars they wouldn't have to give so many away...

whats funny is EVERY FREAKING NEWS ARTICLE I read/saw/heard on the topic mentioned that the cars were donated by GM and that GM was paying for the taxes etc too. Maybe the blog or forum you saw it on didn't mention this... but any creidble news source clearly stated that the cars were donated by GM and given away on Oprah's show...

Gimme a break.

Oprah always credits the actual source of any of those things donated on the show.

shrug.

I think she should run for President.

😛

First, a point of correction. GM didn't pay $7 million for the cars. That's how much they are worth. Their cost is probably under $5 million (might be well under that, but it's anyone's guess how much they cost to manufacture).

Second, NOBODY lost out in this promo.
1)Oprah boosted her ratings and got TONS of free publicity for her show (not only in her target demographic, either), for FREE.
2)GM bought an unprecedented amount of advertisement time on the biggest talk show on TV. Oprah spent the entire episode on the giveaway, touring the cars in the parking lot, going to the plant, etc. Believe me, Oprah pimped the Pontiac G6 unlike any commercial.
3)Instead of doing a simple giveaway, GM gave their cars to people who NEEDED them, thus improving their customer relations.
