opps...burned that cpu up!!!!

Ok, here is the low down. I recently put together a machine for my company with a 800 Duron. A couple of days later my boss comes by and tells me he needs the 800 but has a 600 that I can use in its place. Seeing as how when I placed the 800 in the machine it was recognized correctly I assumed that I could just take out the 800 and put the 600 in its place and that the POST would recognize this. Well, it worked for about 2 minutes and then started flaking out. Now the 600 is dead.

What did I do wrong? Just trying to make sure I dont make this mistake again.

well, I can tell you that 600's must not run at 800.... did you change the jumpers to set the mobo down to run at 600, if not you absent mindedly overclocked and fried it, or it coulda been a voltage issue, i dunno much about durons, try testing it in the mobo it came from, if it dosent work there, i cant help ya, you might have a nice keychain.

I think you roasted your cpu.The motherboard was set up for an 800mhz cpu, when you put the 600mhz part in its place, thats just it,I dont know for sure,as I dont know what type mo/bo,ect.Theres an outside chance if you set the mo/bo for a 600,with the correct voltage it may still work.It may have shutdown from overheating. Now if it'smoked'thats a different story, its history. This is a speed bump in your learning curve.I have been there and done that!

Same thing happened to me when I was messing around with my first Duron 600MHz, trying to make it run at 850MHz.. Set it to 850MHz and it went into Windows perfectly. Eventually had to reset for some changed to take affect or something, so I reseted and went to get a drink.. Came back and had a black screen. Turn the computer off and turned it back on, black screen and then some beeping.. Never worked again. I still don't see what could have caused this; I was using a FOP38 and the CPU wasn't very hot at all.

your mobo should have automaticall detected the speed and correct voltage. i dont know what happened, but you prolly didnt have the settings to "default". i think the they run at the same voltage though

1 piece of advice:

test your "dead" cpu on a different MB/system setup.

IF by remote chance your original MB/system setup was culprit for frying your cpu, you'll have two pieces for your keychain.

Don't know about MB automatically recognizing speed of processors though so be careful.
