Opportunistic Locking

I've got a client (WinXP) server (Win2k server) application that is having all kinds of weird intermittent problems and tech support is telling me to disable opportunistic locking. What in the world is opportunistic locking? How do I disable it? I've seen a few articles on Microsoft?s support site, but I'm totally confused by what I'm reading. Can some clear it up for me?
