970? Is this newer/better than the 971?

Oppo sells the refurb 971s direct from their website with DVI-HDMI and DVI-DVI cables for $160. EDIT: plus $15 shipping.

970HD is a new model, doesn't include the Faroudja DCDi, but will output 480i over HDMI for anyone with an external scaler. It's been $149 since its introduction. Also, the shipping price is only for those in Calfornia.

The Faroudja DCDi is the big reason that people have been buying from Oppo. Without the Faroudja, what sets it apart from any other player?

Perhaps none besides HDMI (where you get both audio and video in the same link or cable). I'm pretty happy with my 971H but will decide whether to let it go and replace it with a HD-DVD or the way over-priced Blue-Ray dvd player from who else, Sony. :disgust:

I'm very happy w/ the 971H. The Faroudja DCDi is the main reason why you would buy it instead of the 970H. The 971H includes a DVi -> HDMI cable so it shouldn't be a problem for people wanting HDMI. I'd recommend the 971H instead of the 970H. For an extra $50 new or $10 refurb, you get better video quality.

But for the folks that have a external video processor that accepts a 480i signal over HDMI, the 970 wins hands down and is cheaper to boot, as long as you don't include the cost of the video processor :)

I have the 971 and it's great. This company actually listens to its consumers and fixes things in the firmware, even adds features. For instance I updated a couple weeks ago to fix the sound sync issue, and it now scrolls song titles when you're playing MP3 with it. I use 1080i through the DVI output to a Mitsubishi 52" DLP and it looks amazing. Heads and tails above the Philips 642 that I was using. It plays faster and loser with MPEG4 as well, supports a lot of files that the old one choked on. I can only speak for the 971 though, never used a 970.

When doing research on whether to choose the 970 or 971 it comes down to the size of your television. Anything > 42" go with the 971. Anything 42" or lower the 970 is perfect. The 970 also plays SACD !
