Opinions regarding Duron Applebred processors & Nforce2 boards

My processor died a few weeks ago and amd sent me a AMD XP 1900+ Palomino core to replace it. I am looking into selling it and going for a Duron Applebred 1.6 since I heard it overclocks well and runs stable. I am also looking into buying a nforce2 motherboard which can support it, preferably something which can support a Zalman cnps7000a heatsink. I mainly use my pc for gaming, surfing, basically just having tons of stuff going at one time. I was wondering if you guys think the Applebred will be a better option for me in this case. Price is not a factor since I can sell my current cpu for about the same price as the applebred.

The motherboard is my other problem. I have been looking into getting a nforce2 motherboard. Something preferably which supports my heatsink (I find it easy to mount, a good cooler and very quiet) but if you can suggest something which is great bang for the buck and doesn't support the CNPS7000A then I will consider it. I am really not looking for too many features and am really trying to stay away from Asus (bad bad experiences with them all around). Any suggestions?

Regarding the first part of your question, sorry can't help you there.

Regarding the second part about a nForce 2, I recently got my self a AOpen AK79G-1394 board and I love it. Nice sound on board (SoundStorm) and onboard Geforce MX. Since you didn't state what graphics card you currently have, maybe it would even be an upgrade for you video too.

If you want to overclock, nothing beats the Abit NF7-S. Many people have theirs at around 220-230fsb. Newegg is selling it for $100 shipped, which isn't bad at all for such an awesome board.

Thanks for the feedback guys always very helpful.

Sunbird: I have a Geforce Ti 4200 and am pretty happy with it for now so a new Vid card is not really needed. And I will only go for on board sound if they decide to have 2 speaker inputs instead of one! Till then my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is doing well for me :). I will look into that AOpen though. Overclocking is something I want to do so any board that supports it well is a definete choice.

myocardia: I have been looking into the NF7-S, the only reason I haven't bought it yet is that my Zalman doesn't fit onto it. But it is looking very likely I will be buying it irregardless and getting a new HSF.

Some information on the Applebred would be very helpful, please help me out guys!

I dont know much about Abit or Aopen Nforce2 motherboards other than the Abit is suppose to be good for overclocking. I would think that a Asus A7N8X would work, but I have never put a Duron on it. However the lower end 1600xp-2400XP processors should run fine and the lower end Athlon processors do not cost too much when you can find them for sale.

As far as overclocking goes, I have good performance from the Speeze Falcon Rock CPU Cooler. It runs about $9.00 or so, and has a 8 cm Fan. I put one in a Asus A7N8X Deluxe and it fit on the motherboard. They are a bit difficult to put on, but once it is on properly it does not move around. I put on on my son's computer with a curved clear plastic mod between the cooler and the fan to try to get more even air flow on my son's computer. He is at college and we have sent his computer back and forth a couple times and it is holding up. I think for $9.00-$10.00 plus shipping these make really nice CPU Coolers. I bought the last one a www.newegg.com

I tried 2 duron 1600's. They both ran well at 166 fsb (2000) with no voltage increase. Unfortunately, the Fry's k7vta3 motherboards wouldn't post consistantly, so I returned both the cpus and motherboards. I tried 4 different boards with 2 quality power supplies and 2 different video cards. All same result. But the 1600 should overclock extremely well with the abit nf7-s version 2.0. I wouldn't be surprised if some will overclock at 200 fsb(2400).

Quite a few people on this forum have the NF7-S, with a Zalman heatsink on it. Of course, they all have the 7000CU or 7000Al-CU. If that's what you have, it will fit. If not the Thermalright SLK-900a is a very good heatsink (supposedly more efficient than the 7000Al-CU).
