That's because it was under constant use. THere was an article a few months ago about a guy whose Honda completed a million miles without any major repairs, he said that there is no magic or tricks other than keeping it under constant use. I think that applies with lots of cars, not all, but lots.
Maybe! My 91 Cavalier had over 220,000 when it was traded in. We drove that car a lot, and it still ran pretty well! 😀

Cavaliers are chick cars. And they suck.

Cavaliers/Sunfires are fine if you're a cheap bastard (or HAVE to buy a domestic).

But you'd be better off getting a slightly used Corolla or Civic than going with a piece of sh!t Cavalier. Crappy interior (OMG, that has got to be the WORST looking interior to ever grace an economy car in recent years), looks like crap, horrible build quality, piss poor crash test ratings, pitiful resale value, and body panel gaps so large that you could probably stick a pencil through.

Hell, I'd buy a Hyundai or Kia before I'd buy a Cavalier (and that's saying a lot).

Now the new '05 Chevy Cobalt is a totally different story...

For God's sake man!! Don't do it! The Cavalier is the biggest pile of crap! I thought that you were smarter than that Jokersmoker? There are MANY much better cars out there. Even if you go domestic, the Ford Focus is MUCH better. The Neon is better.

This is from someone that drives a GM product too.

never liked em... insides are garbage and plastic and seats are uncomfy
It's not only that, it will fall apart on you and it will be in the shop quite a bit. If you do buy one, make sure that your dealer has a good loaner car program.

Speaking of loaner cars, when I'd take my Honda in for service, I'd get a loaner for the day. Sometimes I would get Cavalier's or Grand Am's and other times I would get a Geo Prizm. The Geo Prizm was the same car as the Toyota Corolla and you could tell. Going from a Cavalier to a Prizm was like night and day, even though the Prizm had much cheaper materials than the Corolla.

I've also had girlfriends that have owned Cavalier's and they all had horror stories about their Cavalier's. One girlfriend traded hers in on a VW and the other traded it on a Honda. Both of them couldn't have been happier with their upgrades either. It seems like a lot of girls end up buying the Cavalier for their first new car. What a mistake.

Unless you get a really good deal on one (like $3k below invoice) I'd stay away. A Cavalier will depreciate faster than you make payments early on (upside down in the loan.) The platform goes back to early 80's GM engineering (their dark years) and has received only updates over time. I've rented one and, at least new, it was totally competent basic transportation but lacks the refinement and quality of Civic and Corolla. Like I said, only reason to buy one is if you get a killer price.

The new Cobalt is based on a European platform so it will be a huge improvement (they know how to do small cars.)

Check out the Civic VP - the replacement for the DX model. Comes with A/C and a CD player now, and won't be much more. After owning two GM cars personally, and coming from a family that still for the most part sticks by GM, I will never own another one. My ex-gf had a Sunfire... god, what an awful car. I second the opinion on the Geo Prizm though - GREAT buy for the $$. It's a Geo, so it's got crappy resale, but it's really a Toyota, so it's built very very well. My GF's 94 Prizm just turned 172K with only minor problems (new CV shafts a few weeks ago).

It's not so much that they are not reliable..its just they suck at being cars.

They are noisy, uncomfortable, have substandard build quality, unrefined engine, and rattle all over the place.

They are however dirt cheap, which is why they are so popular here (in my neck of hte woods anyway).
