Opinions on where to buy Canon Digital Rebel XT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I don't think Hot Deals is either as the rules in Hot Deals forum imply you can only post deals but not ask about them.

Anyway I'm looking to buy a Canon Rebel XT with lense kit.

So far newegg.com seems to have a good deal for them, but I'm not aware of any better deal.

Anyone know of a better deal for the Rebel XT? Also, is newegg.com a reputable place to buy stuff from?

Thanks

Are you serious? :Q Resellerratings.com much?

I don't buy much online. Amazon.com is the only place I've bought stuff from online, and its mostly been DVDs and books.

Newegg is good for most things but I'd pass on them for cameras. I bought my Canon A75 from them and it had a couple small problems. I called them to get it fixed/replaced and they said they didn't handle that, the manufacturer did. I was leaving on vacation or something at the time and only had a week or two; Canon said it would be awhile, so I still have the camera with the small problems to this day. So meh on them for cameras 🙂

DSLRs are a different story. The standard is, if they break, you pretty much have to return them directly to a Canon authorized repair center, not back to the store. It's not like a motherboard that you return back to the retailer. I'm not sure about P&S cameras though.

Cameta Camera

Bought a brand new Rebel TI a couple of years ago with two lenses. Excellent service and the price was better than anyone else. I purchased the camera via one of their eBay auctions but they chose to call me to confirm the order and confirm the address.

If you're a Sam's Club member, the camera kit is $699

I stopped by a CompUSA today that is closing, and the same camera kit is $675 after discount. This was in Torrance, CA today.

Here's another uber cheap deal on Beach Camera...it has to be a mistake.
BeachCamera has it for $269!

Are you, uh, sure you're ready for an SLR?

😛

whoops i didnt know it was a film camera or read the description in detail...all i saw was 'Rebel SLR' and '$269' and got all excited! 😛

I think its time to upgrade anyway, you can find some of the pics I've taken at:

It's probably a good idea to choose one of those. The standard Rebel XT kit lens isn't all that great, but that 17-85 IS lens will get the job done.

Man... I wish that lens would have been around when I got MY Rebel XT :frown:

That's really pricey though, and I don't think I'm talented enough to take advantage of that lense. Why isn't the standard kit lens that great?

There is a $400usd difference between getting the standard kit and the one in that link!

the standard kit lens isn't that great because back in the day when people who don't know what they're doing saw zoom lenses for the first time (this was the mid 80s), they demanded that zoom lenses come in SLR kits. and they demanded that it cost no more than the 50 mm prime lenses (which are the cheapest thing to manufacutre) that previously came with the kits. so the camera manufacturers developled zoom lenses that are absolute junk, and packaged those with all kits from then on. (which partly explains the slow-down in SLR sales in the mid 80s, because suddenly the pictures from an SLR out of the box were just as muddy as a point & shoot camera)

btw, rumor has it that canon is introducing a slew of new cameras at photokina next month, including a new rebel (or two). might want to hold off for that.

actually, the way several of their cameras have gone into 'discontinue' i'm almost certain they're releasing new cameras next month. you can hardly find S80s right now.

That was mid-80s, but I'm sure the kit lenses of today are superior in quality than those days.

As for waiting for the new Rebel XT, won't that be pricier? $669USD for Rebel XT kit seems to be a pretty damn good deal. The new camera may come out at a $1000usd which is a lot more. Plus would it be better enough for me (a n00b) to notice the differences?

When a new model comes out, prices could drop on the old one.

That is true, but it is pretty cheap already. And do I want to wait? Well I suppose I could, I waited over a year already, what is another few months?

bump on opinions of the standard kit lens!

I really don't like the kit lens, mainly because my pictures come out noticably less sharp in "Auto" mode than with the 28-200 Canon lens that I normally use. I'm sure that the other SLR guys on this forum can give a more technical explanation than that, or you can read This Review if you want a really in depth explanation of the shortcomings of the kit lens.
