Hey, I'm thinking about ordering this DVD-ROM.

How are your experiences with it? I know, I know, the Pioneer slot load is all nifty and stuff...but what about this one? I'm not even going to think about getting a Lite-On either, I used to have one of their DVD-ROM's and it was horrible, loud, and wouldnt read any CD that wasn't basically perfect. I've read good comments and reviews on the Toshiba, but I was wondering what y'all thought about it. 🙂

Toshiba's are nice DVD's i had the 16x48 model below that one... Pretty much the same drive but mine wouldn't read dvd-ram stuff... The DAE on them is terrible... One reason why i got rid of mine and the 2nd was i got a black case and needed a black drive 🙂 so i got the Lite on 16x48 and all i can say is DAMN! This Lite On is quiet its fast and average DAE on it is 36x for me which is a lot better than the 12x i would get with the Toshiba i had....

I've purchased three Toshiba DVD-ROMs for three separate machines. My first was purchased in 1998 and worked for 4 years until I broke it. I purchased a 16x from Newegg for my new box, and it's an ok drive. My only complaint is that it gets pretty loud at full speed.

My toshiba was fine with regular dvds and cdroms but was slow as hell on cdr's and rw's and did crappy dae so i also went to the 16x liteon and that has been a great dvd reads everything really well and does 36x dae. I do agree it is a bit loud though compared to the toshiba.

I've had the 16x/48x Toshiba for about a week. I haven't tried DAE but it appears that the 2x DVD ripping limit is gone on this model. Also, mine reads CD-RW media at full speed and is QUIET!

The only downside to this model is that CompUSA 99-minute CD-Rs don't work in it. It will read the directory fine but any attempts at file access will kick the drive down to PIO mode and not read any data. The only way I can get UDMA back is by removing it's IDE channel from Device Manager and letting Windows reinstall it :|

Thanks for the replies all. I've read the other thread and everything, and I'm still thinking I'm gonna go the Toshiba route. I'm still weary of Lite-On after owning one previously, even though the ripping speeds are nice and high. However, I don't really rip often at all. One thing that caught my eye on the Toshiba was the fact that it had no problems reading and ripping subchannel data with CloneCD, which is something I use pretty often. As for Pioneer, it's just too much for me right now.

I'm mainly going to be using the drive for DVD playback and cd-to-cd copying, and this drive seems to suit me quite well. The Lite-On was tempting, but my last Lite-On drive wasn't all I had expected, really..

Thanks for the input though. It's always good to doubt your final decision before just blowing away $58 🙂

Grab a Toshiba 12X DVD drive instead. IIRC, they had pretty good DAE (compared to their 16X drive), and the overall drive quality is much superior to Lite-Off.

Asus makes some nice drives too.
