Opinions on this laptop.

That should work great for everything except 3D games (web Flash games will be fine). The HP also wins points for style.

You could get something something similar with a 120 - 160 GB hard drive instead of 250 GB for $200-300 less, but it might mean waiting a couple of weeks for a Dell Vostro to ship.

A nice gift to go with this (or any other laptop) is an external hard drive for backing things up. The hard drive is usally the first thing to die on a laptop.

And I worry when I am 100% in agreement with VinDSL. 🙂 As for 3D games, it was not part of the projected usage. It's a good machine.

Later on you can consider replacing the 5400 HDD with a 200 GB 7200 one, and putting the 250 in an external case as a data archive container.

Or, simply install a 2GB ReadyBoost drive, and let the HD snooze... 😉

Well, she's not really a hardcore comp user. She wants to write a book in her spare time and just do basic web surfing and music downloading.

Really?!?!? Interesting...

I've NEVER met a girl that didn't eMail her friend!

They usually only have 1 or 2 girlfriends, and they tell them EVERYTHING!

Guys have 10s or 100s of buds, and they don't tell each other sh!t - everything's a big secret!

Anyway, I think you found the one... 😉

I heard the Dell was the best notebook you could get. They use better parts and Vista is better supported on the Dell.

Whoever told you that - give 'em a box of Crayons for Christmas!

You won't have to listen to them for hours... 🙂

Make a note to yourself, to never get PC advice from that person again.

Dell uses the same parts as everyone else.
