opinions on radimax aurora 600w psu

Thinking of ordering that psu to replace my existing one. I have an asus P5K SE mobo and my current psu is just 20 pin...it's been working ok with that but I want to upgrade, plus I want to stick in a better graphics card. Not sure what card yet but something in the $250 price range probably.

Any opinions on this power supply being used for that purpose? My current psu is a thermaltake (i think) and around 420w i believe.

I have 2 sata HDs, one IDE drive, 1 dvd burner, and an E6750 cpu with (2) 1gb sticks of ram. I want to upgrade that to 4 sticks eventually.

Any opinions?

Raidmax just sucks, no questions. Some suck less than others, the high-end ones might come close to decency. But that's it.

It wasn't a joke... Raidmax PSU's are POS. Their higher end models come very close to cutting decent but for the price of those you miles well just pick up a quality PSU from anther company.

Most people will reccomend...

Corsair
Antec Earthwatts[I haven't seen a review of the 650W though, it's not the same OEM they used with others so I'd stay way for now] & Quattro lines
Silverstone
Xigmatek
Xcilio Greatpower Line
Pc Power & Cooling
Etsasis
FSP [Some of them]
Seasonic

Prolly more but I don't have time to look more, I gotta leave for work.

It is both a joke and an indication that there might be something wrong with that PSU. Raidmax does not have a great reputation with PSUs. Indeed their lower wattage units and their units bundled with their cases are... pretty bad. They won't necessarily explode like fireworks, but they are known to not quite be able to output what they claim on the label. So, you might be thinking that their 600W power supply is cheaper than, say, a Corsair 450W power supply. However, in real world usage, the Corsair will be able to put out more power (and be more stable) than the Raidmax.

This is just a rule of thumb, and some Raidmax units may not be as bad as others. However, overall they have not quite proven to be good enough.

That one is only 380w though. Is that going to be enough once i drop a bigger vid card in there? I was thinking 450w-500w would have been a safer bet for me. Although i did check with an online power calculator and it said I'd only need 300w, so maybe 380w is all i need.
I picked a 9800gtx as the vid card when i used the power calculator, and that might even be a bit higher then i actually go.

Man if that's all i need I've really been over-paying for power supplies all these years ;p

thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I was going by the reviews on newegg and they seemed to be ok for the most part - 4 out 5 - so i thought it would of been a safe bet. I know not to skimp on the psu - just figured if everyone else had an ok experience with it, it was ok. I'll stay away from it now.

I never purchase a product based on newegg review, because most people just say 5/5 because it works when they first turn it on, and you can post reviews without even owning the product.

Hmm, i dont know about that. I've found the reviews on newegg are usually helpful, if you bother to read them and not just look at the overall score. I look at the ones that give bad reviews as well to see if there's a common theme to them.

anyhow, i'm going to try and order that psu along with a new vid card and maybe some ram now before i head off to bed.

heh...i'm too slow. I added the vid card to my cart, then did some other stuff and then came back to check out, and they were out of stock, and they dont expect to get more in stock until after the rebate expires.

Never, EVER, go by Newegg product reviews. The reviews are not moderated and consist of noobs, shills and trolls. There is no purchase required to do a Newegg review and I think that's a HUGE mistake on Newegg's part.

There is absolutely NO value to Newegg reviews.

and it says minimum 400w psu.
Was going to get a 430w antec earthwatt but it doesn't seem to have any molex connectors at all and I have 2 IDE HD's and 1 dvd burner which uses them.

So i guess I'll go with this one:

Little more then i need, but at least i know I'll have plenty of room to expand if i decide to put a half dozen drives in my system 🙂

Replace card with 9600GT.

Replace PSU with one of these

I cant go with a 9x series card...my mobo (ASUS P5K SE) doesn't support pci-e 2.0 and all the 9x series cards were 2.0.

Right now I'm wondering if i can use an antec earthwatts 380w psu. There's a really good deal on that at newegg. Between the rebate and free shipping i'll save $40. Turns out the earthwatts do have enough connectors. i thought at first it had no molex connectors. According the power caluclator i used, 300-330w is enough for me. But according to the specs on that vid card, it wants a 400w psu: Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amps.)

Think that antec would work? Other then the vid card i have 3 7600rpm HD's (2 sata, 1 ide), dvd burner, 4 sticks of ram and an E6750 cpu. Nothing's overclocked and I dont plan on overclocking anything.

thanks

heh... yeah i just discovered that a few minutes ago 🙂 i'm lookin at the 9x cards now. thank you again.

It would work, yes. The only thing you would really have to worry about is noise, as it's cooled by a 80mm fan and I don't know how loud they get on those PSU's. Also, those nVidia spec's are a load of crap, only thing feasible on their is the amp rating but I'd bet even that is a load too.

well just to let everyone know, i got it all working using a asus 9600gt card with a 430w corsair psu. Which also solved a weird problem i was having when powering on after shutting down - system would freeze during vista loading unless i first unplugged the psu and hit the power switch to drain the psu completely. I was hoping this problem would get fixed with a new PSU and it did. The old psu was 20 pin and the mobo was 24 pin. new psu is 20+4

did give myself a bit of a scare at first though. I installed the ram, booted up to make sure it worked. Then installed the PSU and booted again. and then swapped the vid card...and got bios beeps. But reseating the card fixed it.

thanks for the help from everyone.

I've even seen reviews of people giving five eggs because "it's just an awesome product, I'm still waiting for it." Yeah, reviewing a product you haven't yet received.

if you actually read the individual reviews they can be helpful, at least i've found them to be. If you just read the over-all stars without looking at the individual reviews, it's not as helpful. More so the ones who comment on what the problems are since they usually get specific, and it's usually enough for me to take a semi-educated guess as to if whatever the item is will work/is worth it.

just my 2 cents
