Opinions on Polk RM75 speakers?

Newegg is selling the Polk RM75 speaker set for $150 with a coupon code:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...90146&Tpk=rm75

I've been looking for smaller speakers (due to the wife factor) and I think these might be the ones because of the price and decent reviews. Any thoughts or opinions? I already have an Infinity subwoofer and currently, I am using 2 JBL bookshelf speakers for the front and ancient Technics for the center and rear surrounds. I don't have the model numbers for those handy. I have a Denon AVR2310CI receiver and the room is probably 17 X 15, if I had to guess.

Also, I know these aren't as good as the Energy 5.1 Take Classic set, but they're less than half the price and I'm cheap. :D

What Drako said. I find those speakers very underwhelming and you are going to miss out a lot on sound for your room size.

I know it might be a 'discussion' but you should really try to push for some nice floorstanding speakers. Hopefully you'll get lucky and they will just fade into the rooms background and your wife will eventually not notice!

If that doesn't work you can get some nice monitors - but I am not to familiar with these so I don't have any recommendations

If it was me I would save my money and pass on these speakers

Personally I feel you'd be better off spending the same money on a pair of nice speakers and run stereo or 2.1 sound instead of buying 5 speakers just because they have the right price. I've built my own speakers when I couldn't afford to buy nice speakers, if you've got the tools and skills you could reasonably afford to build 3 very nice speakers for a front stage. This pair cost me about $55 for the parts plus $10 shipping and another $10 for materials to build the cabinets. I got the woofers (yes they're woofers, despite being 4" they'll play solid down to 40hz) when they were on sale, with current pricing the pair would cost another $20-30, but still offer a lot of value.

Edit: Scratch that, the woofers are back on sale you could build a pair for fronts and a pair for surrounds for around $130. I believe there's a center channel design to match that would cost in the neighborhood of $45 to build.

Thanks guys, I'll just keep what I have. Money isn't really the issue; it is the size and intrusiveness of the speakers that is the biggest issue. The wife complains about the bookshelf speakers I am using for the fronts so I doubt I can do floor standing in their place.

I'm not displeased with my current speakers, but I was hoping to get something smaller especially for the center. My current center is too tall to be placed in front of the TV so it is kind of off to the center and behind the TV. I'll probably try to mount it to the top of the TV.

I feel for you man. You need a man cave :)

I was going to suggest a Bose Acoustimass system as a joke.

I actually have a man cave, but I wanted to build out the "family" theater since it would be the most beneficial for everyone. I may eventually buy a new receiver for the man cave and wire the room for 5.1 or 7.1, but it is mainly the room for my computer and video game gear. I did mention to her last year that I was thinking about redoing the man cave and implementing a proper theater in there, but she didn't like that idea.

You wouldn't believe the struggle I went through to get what I have. When I was single and lived in my own house, I wired my living room for 5.1 and had a receiver. When we moved here in 2008 and got married, I didn't hook it back up because I felt I needed a new receiver since mine was old and we wanted to complete some other projects first.

Fast forward to this fall, and my wife is encouraging me to buy a new TV for the living room since she wants to shift TVs around as part of some redecorating she was doing. So, I used that as my chance to bargain -- I told her I would agree to it but 1) we were getting a blu ray player (I have a PS3, but it is in my man cave) and 2) I would eventually get a new receiver. She reluctantly agreed. We got the TV and blu ray and then I started researching receivers. She tried to discourage me and told me we didn't need one. I told her that I was getting one and it was going in the living room, along with speakers. I promised her I'd make the speakers as least intrusive as possible. I even used extra wire and cleared space in the cabinet so that we could "hide" the speakers when not in use and just pull them out when needed. She didn't like that and now they're out. :D

The issue with the G25 plasma is that it sits low and the IR receiver is only about 3" off the ground and in the middle of the TV (a really bad design), so I really can't put a speaker in front of it on the entertainment cabinet. I put the center behind the TV and it was OK, but as you can predict, it did block much of the sound due to the stand. Now, I have it behind the TV but off to the side and it does sound much better. I just need to rerun Audyssey setup to adjust for the new position.

I just got a 50G25 for Christmas! I love it except for the annoying red power light on the front next to the IR receiver. Fixed that with a couple dabs from a Sharpie :).

Does your AV cabinet have a shelf below the TV with room enough for the center channel speaker?

The only issue I have with the G25 (besides the questionable placement of the IR sensor) is that the built-in Netflix bypasses the TV's video processing, meaning you can't adjust modes when watching Netflix. Not a show stopper, but annoying.

No, it is a "fancier" A/V cabinet that is split in the middle and has wood and glass doors on it. The wife wouldn't go for anything that wasn't "cute." The entertainment center from my old home is in my man cave and home to another Panny plasma, one of my Xboxes, my PS3, and an HTPC. It didn't pass the "wife test" so therefore, it was exiled to my man cave. :D

Do you know what specifically she doesn't like about the bookshelves? (Do they stick out too much, too boxy, not the right color etc)
Can you get us a picture of the front of your room?

I don't understand women. I really don't. A candle is an okay knick knack and a decoration. A mirror the same way. Some goofy wreath thing made out of sticks and twine is okay. A tiny little table to accumulate even more candles and stupid knick knacky clutter is okay.

But something like this is an eyesore?

WTF?

I'm not a woman, and I agree, that's an eyesore :).

They look like some kind of alien space craft.
