Opinions on new John Mayer album...

Best album of the year, with the exception of the new version of Come Back to Bed, that's the only track I don't really care for. I like his new electric style.

I bought two copies of it (one for me and one for the GF). I've listened to it about 8 times now all the way through and I love it!

It DEFINITELY has a more "manufactured" sound to it than Room for Squares or Inside Wants out. Even with that fact, it is a very good album, although a little on the short side. I'm particuarly fond of Home Life, Daughters and Wheel. My GF likes Clarity...I think she likes the uuuooo-ooooo parts in the song for some reason.

Why does everyone compare John Mayer to Dave Matthews? I can tell a distinct difference in their voices and style.

I don't think it's half as good as Room For Squares. That album was brilliant. Now, I've only listened through a couple of times. I don't mind the "beefed-up" electric sounds, the added percussion and bass are welcome, but I found the main appeal with Mayer was his warm, intimate voice and melody. The added layers detract from this.

Instantly, "Clarity" is my favourite track. However, I have noticed that the songs aren't as narrative as his previous work, like the tracks from Room For Squares, which I miss.

The songs don't strike me in the same was as his last album did. I'm going to give it a proper chance, but I'm a little disappointed.

I was rather unimpressed with the album too after first listening to it. But after listening to it through a few times and looking over the lyrics in the CD insert (the insert is actually pretty cool as each song is color-coded according to the emotions he was feeling during writing the song, where he wrote it, what emotions it should invoke in you, etc.), I warmed up instantly to it.

I usually don't like it when artists change up their music like this (like when DMB put out "Everday"...PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE), but this conversion sounds about right to me for a second album. I'd rather him change up than keep doing the same old drill.
