Opinions on Dell LCDs

My beloved CTX monitor is dieing a slow slow death so I need to replace it. The image is getting very very dark and it's just time to go. So I always said my next purchase would be an LCD. Well I've been looking around and they are still very expensive compared to a CRT.

Anywho a youth organization my dad works for is buying a new machine. Were going to get them a Dell but they don't need a monitor since they have one already and they'd like to save the money. So since Dell is having a special on LCDs sold with a PC I'm going to take the LCD and just give them the difference in price. So my two options for LCDs are the DELL UltraSharp 1703FP or the DELL E171FPb. I can't seem to find response times on these two. Anyone know anything about them? Is there a big difference between them? I'll be doing some light gaming on them (Warcraft III, RTCW:Enemy Territory, BF1942) but most of the time it will be graphics, and video editing.

I'm very pleased with my UltraSharp 1800FP so i would imagine the Ultra 1700 series is similiar. I don't play many games but have experience little or no Ghosting when I do (most LCD's will) and the respone time I believe is 25ms

Out of those two, definately take the 1703FB. It just came out and has a pretty good design imo, it also has a dvi input, optional extras include a soundbar. The 171FB is getting old and has no dvi. Both should have a 25ms response time.

Edit: Most of Dell lcds are actually manufactured by Samsung, so the 1703FB is probably a 172T (very good monitor) undercover.

I wouldn't want a dell monitor. If you get one, everyone who sees your computer will assume it's a dell, not a handcrafted, homemade computing masterpiece.

I own a Dell 1800FP (rebadged LG Panel). This is by far the best monitor I have owned. No ghosting or streaking, and the clarity is supurb. The color's are also very true, unlike my previous LCD (Viewsonic). I would recommend the 1800FP to anyone.

I got the 21" LCD when they had that 25% off deal. Best monitor I've ever used. It's the same one that the U.S. government used in Terminator 3 when they're setting up Skylab or whatever it was called. :)

I have a 17" black Dell flat panel display I bought from Tigerdirect.com refurbished. Color is excellent and no dead pixels-had it almost 6 months now. I bought the refurb one because the price was right, shipping was very cheap and I didn't have to pay sales tax on it.

I bought a 17" for my Mom-In-Law also to go with her new Dell system and was shocked to find that it doesn't have a digital connector-it's analog. Oh well, it looks fine and it's not as if she's going to be doing any gaming on it.

Same here. I've had my Dell 1800FP for a few months now. I am an avid gamer and have been completely happy with it for all different types of games.

the 17 and 18 are actually manufactured by diffferent companies. i had a 1702 and 1800 sitting right next to each other one day, the 1702 was a bit nicer to look at

In my opinion, Dell knows which brands to rebadge. As an owner of four 1702FPs, I certainly have had many good experiences with the company. When Dell runs those large rebate deals you can usually get anything on the FP series for huge discounts.
