Opinions on CompUSA hassle

My cousin was going to buy a $2000 laptop from them last July. He paid for the $600 extended warranty(yes, I know it's a ripoff). However, he changed his mind and never went back to purchase the actual computer. So now 7 months later he has the extended warranty pamaphlets and the $600 receipt for it. I called the store manager for him to try and get his money back. I said that since he never bought the laptop that the extended warranty package was for, that the money should be refunded even if it is past the normal 30 day limit. I pointed out that they were holding his money for a service that was not being provided(since a warranty is pointless without the product). The manager pretty much said it wasn't their problem.

Do you guys think my point is valid or should I just drop it? Also, any opinions on what I should say if I go have a little chat with the manager face to face?

Did he get an exchange on the laptop? If so, maybe you could talk to the store manager and see about transferring the warranty to the new computer. I don't forsee you being able to get the money back.

"7 months later"

I'd bet that's the major problem with getting a refund on the warranty service. At what point did your cousin not want the laptop?

When he went there looking for a laptop, he did buy the $600 extended warranty. It was for an HP laptop. However, he never went back to pay for/pick up the laptop. So in effect he bought the extended warranty, but no computer to apply it to.

Since then, he has built an AMD box and has no wish to transfer the extended warranty to a new machine fromCompUSA.

Hope this clears it up a bit.

He bought $600 worth of warranty then waited 7 months to figure out he forgot the laptop?

It's his own fault

Having worked for CrapUSA and been a leader in selling the extended warranty, I'll tell you now that CompUSA really can't give him his money back. He(you) need to ask the manager what company is actually providing the warranty, and speak with them. When I worked there, Warrentech was the company that covered the extended warranty.

But 7 months is a little long. Also it used to state in the warranty info that they can do a refund on a pro-rated basis.

Go to your local computer show and buy a cheap piece of crap laptop. It has to have all the parts in it that came with it. MAke sure the hard drive is shot, the screen doesn't work and that the motherboard is hosed. Then try to claim warranty on it with your extended warranty. If they don't have a serial number on it they will try to deny your claim. All you have to do is tell them if they will not honor their CONTRACT with you you will sue them. This works most of the time and you will get the closet thing that is available in the retail chain. Or they will refund your warranty purchase.

dude, r u leaving some details out? becuz from what i read... this is pretty dumb. why would u buy just a warranty, and no product? that makes no sense what so ever. first of all... compusa is not going to say no to money... if u want to buy the warranty w/o a product... they don't care. its money in their pockets. they'll say anything at the moment of sale.

so basically, your "cousin" goes into compusa to buy a laptop, but decides to come back later to really buy the laptop. but in the meantime, he buys the warranty. then he decides to not buy the laptop, but holds onto the warranty? why did he not try to get his money back right away? thats $600 we're talking about... no chump change. now 7 months later... u call go to compusa and ask for a refund of the warranty? put yourself in the manager's position dude. 7 months later? and u want a refund? i'm surprised he didn't just bust out laughing. as you pointed out... it was past the normal 30 day limit for returns/refunds.

isn't this fraud? and blackmail too? openly endorsing fraud and blackmail on a public forum might not be a good idea.

Croton and Spanky007, I know it sounds a little odd to wait for 7 months, but I left out absolutely no details. That is exactly how it happened. My cousin is VERY irresponsible with money. He had paid for the warranty in cash, and was going to use part of his student loan money on the laptop. He spent the money he was going to get the laptop with so he never went to pay for it and pick it up.

JeffreyLebowski, why would I have to contact the company that handles the extended warranty directly? Does CompUSA forward the $600 to them or does CompUSA keep it? Thanks.

For those of you calling him an idiot and stuff, I agree. I'm just trying to help him out a little.

someone already mentioned this... but i think the only plausible solution is to try to get compusa (or the company who actually issues the warranty) to transfer the warranty to another computer. i'm pretty sure they will not give u back any $.
