Opinions on 2006 Nissan Frontier SE 4x4 Crew Cab?

My dad has an 06 Nissan Frontier SE 4x4 Crew Cab on lease. His lease will be ending within a few weeks, and he wants to know if I'd be interested in buying it before he turns it back in. He said that he'll sell it to me for his payoff price, $15,500. It has just under 34,000 miles, and I think that it's in excellent condition. I say that only because I know he babies his vehicles, he's not been involved in any collisions, and he always has the routine maintenance done in a timely manner. I'd still have a mechanic thoroughly review it before I bought it, if I decide to go that route. Just browsing AutoTrader, it looks to me as though $15,500 is definitely a better price for that model than I'd ever be able to find at a dealer.

Right now I have an 04 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP CompG. It's a good car, I suppose... I've had to replace several things multiple times though, so it makes me worry. It's going to hit 80,000 miles within a day or two, and the aftermarket warranty will also be expiring soon. I usually drive 20,000 - 25,000 miles per year. I'm thinking that perhaps it would be financially beneficial for me (long-term) to sell the car now, and buy the truck. KBB values my car at around $6,900 right now, so I think that I'd be good to get $6k out of it, and a friend (who is also a mechanic) is willing to buy it for that. He (and several other mechanics I know) recommended selling the car at my earliest convenience, because they figure I'll run into problems with it within the next year. I'll hit 100,000 miles, warranty will be expired, I'm kinda hard on vehicles, and I'm going to be doing a fair amount of long-distance (to me, 4+ hours from home qualifies) driving.

I've done a lot of reading about Nissan Frontiers online in the last few days. The biggest complaint (by far) is poor fuel mileage, getting 15-16 in the city and 19-20 on the highway. I can live with that. There are miscellaneous other complaints that I've read here and there, but none seem to be very significant. I looked it up on Consumer Reports, and they report that it is a "good bet", and is "better than average". I think that it would be nice to me because I can haul 4 or 5 people in it (if necessary), and it also has the truck bed for hauling (and a hitch for towing). I've had to borrow my little brother's truck several times lately, for multiple reasons... I don't *need* a truck, I don't think, but I like sitting up higher off of the roadway, don't mind paying for the extra fuel, and it would definitely come in convenient when I do need to haul or tow stuff. The Frontier also looks like it would be easier to work on (than the current Grand Prix) if I wanted to modify it in any way (add lights, replace head unit, hard wire accessories, etc), which appeals to my inner geek.

Does anyone have any thoughts, or reasons why I definitely should or should not buy the Nissan? Any "gotchas" that I should look out for, that might not have been mentioned in reviews and other forum reading?

Thanks!

Looks like a good deal to me depending on what options it has... if it's got some good options, I'd say it's a deal.

Nissan makes decent trucks as long as you don't really need them for trucks type activities. (IE: They don't have great load capacity and low end grunt)

I had an '05 Frontier LE 4x4 CC that I traded in for a more family friendly car (and 6 months before we saw $4.00+ a gallon gas).

It's a great little-big truck. I test drove the Tacoma back to back to back between the Frontier and the Nissan bested it in almost every measurable category. Most notably seat comfort. It really is one of the most comfortable vehicles I've driven of any class or category. The seats are just very well designed with armrests in the right places for my 6' build. If you Dad's has the utilitrac that's a great feature too.

Road manners are also exceptionally good for a truck and the ride was very smooth. The 4.0L VQ is a gutsy motor with plenty of muscle to move the vehicle around.

The only real complaints are a milage - I never saw above 20MPG in any conditions. And the interior is straight out of 1985. It's basic, but functional.

I really miss my truck 🙁

The price looks *okay* for a 4x4 crew with those miles. Not a smoking deal, but not horrible for no negotiating needed either.

The Frontier is one of the most overbuilt compact/midsize trucks you can buy. It's basically a titan with a bit of a chopped off frame. It's a tank compared to the rather squishy Tacomas, Colorado/Canyons and to some extent Rangers.

Only thing close to it is the V8 Dakotas which might actually have a bit of an edge.

Thanks, vi edit.

Jugernot: Which options, in particular, were you thinking of? I don't recall which options are stock on all Frontiers. I know (off of the top of my head) that it has power windows and mirrors, cd/radio, utilitrack. He doesn't have a sliding bed extender, toolbox, tonneou (sp?) cover, or accessories like those.

I should have had a disclaimer, I consider ALL compact trucks to be inferior for truck type activities. The Frontier Crew can only be loaded with 1400lbs of weight before maxing out..... that ain't much of a truck. Rangers, Colorado/Canyon, etc. all fit into the same category in my book.

Give me a truck that I can load a pallet of concrete block into or give me death! 😛

Standard equipment for SE models is power everthing (minus seat), so I guess I was asking if it had any extras like (sunroof, steering wheels controls, cruise, etc.) otherwise, $15k is just an ok deal.

There is some added value I suppose to knowing the previous owner and knowing it was a cared for vehicle, but that only buys you a bit of value. $15k is ok, it's a bone stock, nothing special SE crew Frontier.

btw, a buddy had a 04 Frontier crew that went through rear shocks like candy. 3 pair in a two year period. I have yet to hear of another Frontier with the problem, but I figured I'd throw that out there as a comment. Nothing more.

It has cruise control. No sunroof, steering wheel radio controls, etc. Doesn't really surprise me, dad likes to stay basic. I've gotten burned in the past when buying used vehicles, because of previous owners abusing the vehicle. I know that it doesn't add a *lot* of value, but I'm definitely more comfortable buying from a known quantity than an unknown.

The Frontier was significantly redesigned in 2005 (generation 2). I've only read about gen2, and haven't read about going through rear shocks very often... hopefully your friend's situation was just an isolated incident.
