EDIT: PRICES ADDED

that's nice but maybe you want a full 2x512 gig of ram? that way it can be used for the immiment release of new next gen games like HL2 and Doom3, games which i'm sure will need 1G of ram. also, maybe a raptor and a WD 80G SE (found for cheap on the hot deals forum)? I know as a gamer the most annoying thing is waiting for things to load, which is mainly hard drive based.

I'm not sure about now but last time I checked the 2.4C was a lot cheaper.

It'd help if you post the cost of each item, so we can hook you up with what can save you $ etc, as there are some goodies on Hot Deals atm.

baboonguy, somewhere down the line another 512 will be added. just not yet. since IS7 has 4 dimm slots, i dont mind getting 2*256

ionizer, the only reason i went for the 2.6C is cuz the 13X multipler is a bit better than the 12X for overclocking. i want to get it to around 3.3Ghz or so but with a 2.4C that would mean a 275 mhz FSB which would be kinda stressin the system a lot as where the 2.6C would do that with a ~254 Mhz fsb

Allright, prices are added, so here's comments:

I'd get the Maxtor 160GB 8MB for ~$80 instead of the WD1200JB to get more disk space, a tad more performance (last time I checked), and to pay less.

Also, local stores like OfficeMax sometimes sell CD burners for very cheap prices. I recall seeing many $20 burners, a few $10 burners, very rarely a free after rebate burner, and once, on Hot Deals, a -$10 burner. I don't know if there are good burner prices this week though. You find Liteons in some boxes; just ask around in Hot deals and some people will know which boxes hold Liteons.

BTW don't forget getting a 92mm fan for the SLK-900. I like low spin speed panaflos for their (lack of) volume. Maybe some Panaflo 80mms for case cooling if your case doesn't come with enough case fans.

where can i get that maxtor?

Usually, there are tons of ads every Sunday in Souther Cali newspapers for Maxtor HDs for cheap after rebate.

Check the hotdeals forums if there any current deals.

Sure you want to go with that Geil?

Some Hyper X 3500 might be able to do 254 FSB easier than the Geil with some half decent timings...

🙂

Looks like great choices to me. Saving $50 by going down to the P4 2.4C and putting that $50 towards 2x512MB of PC3200 might be a better way to go IMO.

Make that PC3500 @ least...

He needs to make it to the range of 250 FSB plus...

Yes, there's a current hot deal on the Maxtor.
Check Hot Deals and search from there whenever you wanna see if there's very good deals.

For now, here is the direct link to getting the 160GB 8MB Maxtor for $70 or $80.

It's actually pretty cool to have separate burner and DVD because you can copy cd's "on the fly"

thats exactly why i go with both. anyway, for the ram, i heard good things about golden dragon series and its dirt cheap for a pc3500 dual channel kit

doesnt a pc3500 run at 216 FSB (216*2=433), so he can overclock only by 16 FSB before he starts overclocking the ram in 1:1 ratio. isnt that a big leap to overclock the ram from the stock 216 FSB ram to 250+ FSB ram?

I'd get 1GB of ram, cuz games coming out in the coming years will utilize it. So, get 2x512 of PC3200 or PC3500. Also, the Audigy 2 OEM is only like $75.00, and I don't think the $100 can justify the little performance advantage of a Platinum.

It's not about performance advantage, it's about having the Audigy drive for a whole lotta front inputs (ie only get the Platinum if you're gonna be using the Audigy drive).

I've not read anywhere except message boards that you need over 512 Megs of ram to run these damn games. These are all assumptions. I did play some RAM hoggers like Generals. What was weird is I played it once with only 256 Megs of ram and it only addressed maybe 100 Megs of the system memory. However when I upgraded to 512, it addressed up to 200+ Megs. So I'm puzzled by this RAM spec. I guess its better to be safe then sorry.
