Hi fellas, Do you think that the below is a reasonable set up? I know I could go DDR but the user who this is for wouldnt really make full use, mainly for CS, no major graphically intensive games, so is this set up ok below?




Abit KT7-A Socket A KT-133A without Audio
256 Mb PC133 SDRAM (Micron)
ThermoEngine Heatsink/Fan
With Athlon 1.4Ghz 266 FSB CPU
GeForce 2GTS 32MB
SB Live! (this ok with this lot)


What HSF should I get, or is the above one a specific model in itself? Thanks

Looks good. If they will be using it as you said, then DDR would probably not be a big advantage, but it WOULD allow them to upgrade/play better games in the future if they so desired...

Also, for a heatsink --- I have a 1.2 @ 1.4, and my Thermaltake Volcano II did a fine job. It ran in the 40-50C range and it was stable. Cheap too... but the Thermoengine wouldn't be bad either.

looks good overall.. plenty powerful for what it seems the user is going to be doing..



Is the user going to want a Hard Drive??
 
That looks like a solid basic system. Although the Thermoengine HSF is ok, you can get the much better Vantec CCK-6035D Copper for the same price. That's the HSF I would go with. Make sure you get a good case for it with a good powersupply. Like an Antec SX635 or one of those Inwin towers with the 300watt psu.

TheGrandHooHa: Might go with the Thermaltake then. Was thinking about the TaiSol CGK760092 as it has those extra clips which I just like. Yeah, i might go DDR, which board should I go for then?

SpecialEd: What hdd would you recommend? Somethign around 20GB will suffice, 60GXP I thought?

Transistor: For the case I will be getting a GlobalWin 802 with a Enermax EG365P-VE 350W , sounds ok?
 
If you're going to go DDR (which you should, since it's really not more expensive and will have more of a future than SDR) and it's not going to be a mad overclocking system, the ECS K7S5A is a great performing DDR board with an extremely good price (can be found as low as $60!).

EDIT: And I second icecool83's comment about avoiding the 60GXP - Here's an article about the issue on hexus.net. For more info check out the StorageReview forums.
 
Thanks for teh ECS link, cant find a retailer for that board at the mo in the UK. Think I'll stick with an Asus DDR board, the A7V266, this a good board?
