I currently have a 1.2 ghz Athlon on an Asus A7v-e mobo with the VIA- KT133 chipset. I will be upgrading some time within the next few weeks and would like some advice. My needs are as follows; I don't care about overclocking, I am an online gamer and I value stability and compatibility over all else. I am leery of AMD due to many compatibility issues I have had thus far but I believe it may be the fault of the chipset. Can anyone tell me which of the current chipset crop (both AMD Athlon XP and Intel P4) have shown the best stability and compatibility for gamers?

Once I make this initial decision I can ask about the several mobos for both platforms that I have researched.

Thank you in advance.

The 2.0 revision of the nVidia nForce2 chipset for AMDs is the best soultion. Can't comment on Intels as I haven't been keeping up on the new chipsets they have out.

Yup. Intels are more expensive, and whats funny, is that intel 3.06 on 865 performs the same as AMD XP2700+ on nForce2 with the same videocard, of course. Im not dissin intels, but i always chose what offered best price/stability/performance above all. My previous PC had PIII 750 EB which was quite aweosme in 2000. And so far, AMD is just plain...better. And really, when it comes to games, VGA card is the limit. Id definitely go with A7N8X + 2700 or 2600, 512 RAM, and VGA like Radeon 9500 Pro, or 9700, and 9700 Pro.

Thank you for the responses. I've done some reading on the nforce boards specifically the Asus A7N8X and it's "deluxe" counterpart. Is there a "best" location to view the latest known issues with this particular chipset (if any) or would a search be my best bet to keep up?

I'm trying to find out as much info ahead of time so I don't paint myself into a corner again.

Thanks again for the help.

Well I don't know of any chipset specific sites, Anandtech has done reviews & has covered the chipset itself with a few articles. There is also an *offical* post that covers most nForce2 boards and that's a sticky at the top of this forum. Also this http://www.nforcershq.com/ site covers pretty much everything nVidia from head to toe and the forums there are loaded with nForce2 info.
