Hey,

got an Epox ultra 3 9nda3. in any case, i went to reinstall xp pro, and the damn thing won't boot beyond the inital post. i'll answer the obvious questions most people ask:

bios? the latest
try new ide cables? yes
try sata? no, don't have sata hd
try diff hard drives? yes
try diff memory? yes
try diff video card? yes
try to post off of ide2 to see if ide1 is dead? yes
try to install xp on same hd but in diff machine? yes, and it worked

xp does it's thing during the intial install (e.g., format drive, load drivers, etc.), but when it rebots it goes through the usual dos crap then bam...nothing. machine doesn't shut down, but keeps runnng.

opinions? really pisses me off since i got a 6800agp. was hoping to have this machine for a while longer. :-[

thanks,
k

I am no expert, so dont flame me if my suggestion is flawed.

Have you tried clear CMOS? <--always work for me 😀

cmos wasn't an issue, but thanks for trying. as for another processor, i don't have a spare 939 laying around. this is the damndest thing i've ever seen.

maybe temp? my mobo has an internel shutoff system that shuts off the mobo if the cpu get's too hot. mine wouldn't boot. i opened up my comp and i saw that there was not enough
airflow. fixed the prob.

If you're using more than 1 stick of memory, try each one separately. Sometimes bad memory will give some pretty weird symptoms.

the thing i don't get is that it was working perfectly. i didn't change a thing. just did a reinstall of xp pro. it craps out at the ultra dma loader, so i tried the drives on different computers w/o any problems.

INTERESTING UPDATE

for grins and giggs i tried loading win98! and it works!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm going to try and load xp pro over it as an upgrade. jesus...this gets more crazy by the minute.

looks like my xp cd may be bad. wonderful! computer didn't like the upgrade.

I agree. Try lowering your memory timings, and set CMOS to fail-safe boot. You also might have a bad memory controller off the chipset.

Update...

Dimm slots one and two are dead! How the hell that could happen without there ever being a hickup prior to this amazes me.

Thanks ya'll for the sounding board.
