Well, for me, performance always takes a priority over looks. I usually always disable eye candy like shadows, coronas, etc. to get a higher framerate.

Many of the newer games still pretty good to me even with minimal settings and no eye candy.
 
Higher framerate seems tangential (at best) to higher res or more eye candy, both of which pertain to looks.

leedog, when you say eye candy, do you mean in-game settings (texture res, model quality, shaders, bloom, HDR, etc.) or AA+AF?
