Hi,

I am customizing another pc and am thinking of OC for more performace but not if the computer is fast enough. I have spent hours doing research on hardwares that I need to buy. My budge is around $800-$850.

Antec Performace Series II case with 350W Power Supply
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra nForce4 ULTRA
Geil Ultra Series Value Dual Channel Kit 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
Chaintech Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 Video Card
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6B250R0 250GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive (am going to split it into 2 or 3 partitions)
BenQ DW1620 PRO Black IDE DVD Burner

I will be using this computer to make music and some web/graphic designing. Would like to be able to run multiple programs at once. If this computer will not be fast enough, do you think I can OC with the specs and the power supply above? I have an $800-$850 budget and so that is what I could buy for my budget.

Will this computer be ok and would I need to OC it for better performace for what I will be doing? Also I would be playing a few games which I know might not be a problem.

Any opinion at all. Thank you

That's completely overkill for what you are doing.
It's enough for any studio class music synthesizer program; as to web design etc

If you wanna overclock, wait for the Venice core which is coming out in a week around $10USD more than a normal CPU

350W is just fine, you'd get away with it.

Isn't the Venice Core already out? When you said "$10USD more," do you mean $10 more than the 64 3000+ cost?

I don't really run multiple programs at once but when I do it is usually Macromedia Dreamweaver, Photoshop, AIM and other non-important programs. I just ordered Poser 6 and would like to know if it would run ok on the system.

Probably going to get a case with 420W or 450W, not sure.

If you're planning to overclock that system forget about using the power supplies that come with most cases.

The Antec cases are the exception as they ship with very good, stable power supplies. If you're going to be doing some modest overclocking and using the components you listed you should be OK with the 350Watt Antec.

If you go with a cheap case then I'd recommend you set aside some money in your budget to purchase a quality power supply separately. Good power supplies are made by Antec, OCZ, and Enermax to name a few.

The 420-450 watt power supplies shipped with most cases are garbage and don't produce a reliable output as stated in their specs.

Even though I don't like you might want to look into an intel solution if you run multiple programs at once.

Is the a64 754 pin? early 754 pin cannot oc too much, my 3000 2g can only oc to 2.2g, rev is early version. you may want to look at 3200 or 3400. just my .02

no, it's a 939 since it's 1.8ghz.

That setup looks very good.

Looks like a nice system. I'd ditch the maxtor in favor of a Seagate myself though.

I tried Intel once and had no success with it. Their cpu is expensive and also can overheat pretty fast, the prescott, which made me having to buy a fast, powerful, and expensive fan and heatsink. Everything about Intel is too expensive, so it is not worth giving it another try. It is fast, but not worth my money to try them again.

The Maxtor I am getting is a DiamondMax 10 250gb ATA133 7200rpm, 9.0ms average seeking time, and 16mb buffer. many other great features with it too. Is it still sucks or can a Seagate SATA drive which is 8mb bufer and 8ms seeking time out perform the Maxtor drive above? Both are 250GB.
