Panny all the way. I've had a panasonic HD RPTV for 2 years now, and I love it. Finally got HD service this month, and the picture quality is amazing. You usually get more bang for the buck with Panny equipment over Sony. Samsung also makes good equipment. Stay away from the RCA.
Definitely seems to be a trend here. I'm rather partial to that Samsung, just based on the price right now. $1800 for a toshiba just seems a bit rich.

Is that "digital reality creation" worth anything with the 53" sony? I will be, as mentioned above, using NON-HDTV satellite for regular tv viewing for a while...

I would look into the:

samsung for $1499

or

Panasonic with built in sat. receiver for $1650

IMO, the Samsung is the better deal. Gives you enough room to work for a warranty deal, and yes, you can haggle the warranty as well 😉

good luck!

How did I miss this thread?

Do not buy Sony! Look at AVS Forum and all the problems people are having with Sony's new top of the line Grand Wega IIIs.

Sonys are garbage I tell you.

I would be real nervous to order a HDTV from a small dealer not local.

I'd rather spend a little more and get it from someone local and not have a nightmare if I have a problem.

I would still love that 55" Mits for $1500. (I know it ain't gonna happen).

AVSForum says the Samsung RPTVs are crap but this year's Sonys are very good.

What nonsense. I can show you complaint threads from all the other manufactures as well. They are all pretty much the same in reliability. Service is the same as well, its pretty much a crapshoot. Skoorb you need to decide depending on your viewing habits. Some models dont scale 4.3 to 16.9 very well. Others have poor line doublers. I hate extended warranties also but negoating for a two year would not be a bad idea. Also trying to get rock bottom price is not a good idea. It's best to buy local with a no hassle return policy like from Sears or the Good Guy's.

😕 Where did Skoorb say he was buying the Grand Wega III?? My two Sony TVs have been going strong for well over 5 years now.

All I know is, stay away from RCA. My dad's an electronics technician and he swears all of them off as soon as the name is mentioned.

You can? Where? If you point it out to me I'll buy one (widescreen please).

Keep in mind I have to have shipping and "White glove" handling, so they'll bring the thing in, set it in place, and remove the boxes.

I picked up one from Conn's. It's a 55" and had free delivery and set it in my house and offered to hook it up but I declined. I don't have the model # on hand but it came out to 1699 + tax.

It makes it look worse. My uncle has a 36" Wega HDTV, and I turned the DRC off. I never bought into those sort of things, its just a pretty name to use as another selling point for sony.

They are all too big!! 😉😛

Oh, and don't get RCA. Every RCA product I've had was a piece of crap!!

: ) Amanda

rca = Crap, The Largest problem is their Tubes Leak
Samsung= ok
Panasonic = Crap
Sony = Great Picture, But Get a warranty

Toshiba= Total Total Crap. Toshiba Just secretly had a major Recall of most of their Projo Units. They also Dont Hold Convergence. Prepare to run a convergence on it about once every 2 weeks. the 51's Are horrible. Toshiba also HAS a problem with Shadow Burnins

STAY AWAY

Mits= They break alot.

I personally just purchased a Sony KP51WS510. Great Picture Quality for the Price.

If YOu have an HHGregg Buy You, Just Know they DO Negotiate Heavily on Price. and will almost always Beat any price BB or Circuit has.

Get the Unit with The Best Color Saturation and The Best picture Quality and Buy a Warranty.

Guess I've not found one for the right price! I have to have 51"+!

Add a little cash and get the

51" Toshiba @BB

That Toshiba is The WORST ( Besides Rca) PROJO That Best buy Sells. Half of the production Models Made Were Recalled By toshiba from Retailers. The REtailers Were Not to make the Recall Known.

Toshiba's are Now PURE Sh!t. They DOnt Display Black as Black and Have problems With Burnin. They are The WORST TV available. The Covergence Doesnt hold its Setting. Go to BB and Ask the salesman His HONEST opinion of TOsh. 15 to 1 odds he says they are junk.

I would have to believe a recall is a good thing; they recognize and fix the problem(s). My friend has a Toshiba and has no problems whatsoever. If your looking for pure-black pictire a direct view TV is best; but I think Skoorb is looking for a larger size TV. Personally, if I was going to spend close to $2000 for a TV, it wouldn't be a projection TV. Lastly, I own a VW it's been recalled, is it PURE Sh!t? Hardly, making generalizations usually turn people off and cloud their buying decision.

Skoorb,
Onecall currently has the Toshiba 51H83 listed for $1,312.94 but it's "coming soon" not in stock.
Personally I'd say go to your local Circuit City and look at the Hitachi (surprised nobody has mentioned Hitachi in this thread yet) TVs. I love my 51SWX20B. You might even be able to convince yourself to get a 43" instead of 51" if you're set on that $1700 max price. Occassionally they do the 12-24 months 0% financing if you could get one of their cards... that's how I got my TV.

Add me to the "RCA's are crap list" take it off the table immediately.

Also you're ignoring the basic formula for big screen TV's, calculate the most you can spend, and then add $1K to it😀

I have a 61" Sony 4:3 & love it, be prepared to allow it to ruin your life.

Also, be sure to plan to buy wireless controllers for your game console.

Actually I was hoping on not getting any sort of extended warranty. Generally they're not worth the money - and if in the case of Sony you pretty well need to get one, well that isn't great at all! I realize it's a pricey purchase with only a one year warranty standard on these HDTVs, but I'm willing to take my chances. But, if the sonys are not so reliable, then that will kill that. The RCA I had on there just as a choice, although it's not a very sexy tv.

From my experience RCA?s may not be sexy but they are reliable. Please reconsider the warranty issue. I ran across a number of cases where technicians needed to replace entire light engines along with the bulb. Bulbs run from $220 to over 300 a pop.
warranties are like $300+ 🙁

I will surely check out costco - I drove there today with friends who have a membership but it was closed! hopefully they'd have something at a decent price...

In regards to toshiba $1800 for a 51 is the best I can find locally and I've not tried looking for anything online.

Where in the world do you live? I thought you lived around atlanta??
Go to best buy. They have the toshiba 57h83 for $1750iirc. Cost is around $1400. Service plan is $300ish iirc.

Here's what you need to do:
go in best buy, look at the tv's. Get to know the salespeople and get to know someone who has worked there awhile. Talk about how hh gregg offered you the 57h83 for $1350. Tell him/her you just bought a fridge there, and are going to be in the market for a washer/dryer/stove in the next month. Tell him if they'll give it to you for $1700 (WITH WARRANTY) that you'll buy it today. I PROMISE that they'd do it.. I see this stuff happen ALL the time, where they want you to buy your other stuff there too. Best buy makes out (they aren't making money on the tv, but are getting the service plan) YOU make out (get the tv AND service plan for less than the cost of the tv..)

the end

ah..through reading through all this drivel, I have to say this:

Just about any TV you get will look like crap out of the box. I bet half of the people here who say "the samsung/sony/panasonic is crap" didn't spend enough time tweaking the television to get a good picture out of it. Also, the in store displays (especially at stores like BB, CC) will not do a television justice at all. I see enough problems with Sony equipment to say there might be a trend, but I wouldn't let that stop you from purchasing one if you have your heart set on it.

Also, purchase the Avia Home Theater Essentials DVD. This will help you get the best picture out of your television.

Extended warranty? I don't think you need one, unless you plan on defrauding the store and getting a new television for free in a couple of years. Otherwise, turn it down.

Finally, are these Widescreen or 4:3 tv's?

Doesn't look secret to me at all.

When the Notice First Went out, They only Recalled Certain Stock Serial Numbered Models In Retail Distro Warehouses. They have some serious problems With Their Newer Models. Got a Friend who is a HDTV tech at the Cleveland BB Service Center. They see Tosh newer models at almost a 3 to 1 ratio to Other current models.

They used to be the Best Tv that BB Sold.

Now, The Newer Sony 510 51" seems to be the King. It is last years 500 series that they updated Some of the "issues" it had.

The Toshiba's and RCA's have Major flaws Including "Leaking Guns"

And let me tell you if One Leaks On to your Carpet. Its screwed.

Rca are pure Garbage. My Bro Works at HH gregg. they call Rca Big Screens "Ghetto-vision"

I don't want to paint Toshiba's as crap, but I bought 3 big screens till I found one that worked, 2 Toshiba's were broken/DOA. Finally gave up & took a Sony instead.

The one that pi$$ed me off the most was when I put in the AVS DVD & tried to calibrate the screen, I couldn't even come close, called the tech he came out to the house looked @ it, pronounced it perfect, I popped in the grid pattern & showed him it was off by over an inch & couldn't be corrected, he took it apart & found the particleboard the guns were mounted on was broken:|

fwiw:
I work at best buy's tech bench. I see/hear of many things with rptv's. IMHO if you want a tv that is super reliable, then rear projection isn't the way to go, regardless of manufacturer. I see an equal number come back., and I talked to the head of our service center before making my choice. I chose a toshiba 57h83 due to that. Yes they got recalled due to a defect. At least they admitted it, and are exchanging it out for a new tv, including pickup and delivery. Most companies try to hide it.
