Opinion on Samsung Hard Drives in general?

optimistic

I'm getting randwom lockups and corrupted files just as of recently. I did scandisk surface test and found 52 bad clusters.

Am I right? Do I need a new hard drive?

Are Samsung Hard Drives a safe bet?

Don't know how they perform, but so far, Samsung customer service is good. I was given a dead 20GB Samsung HD, and I have already gotten an RMA from Samsung. I'll let you know then once I get a replacement.🙂

Great for Internet Cafe usage. 🙂 Actually they are cheap, quiet, and offer decent performance. Great drives for people who just surf the net and use AOL. If you game, database, or do video look elsewhere.

Back around the holidays someone brought me a system to work on. It seemed that a power surge had fried the mobo, cpu and hdd. (I built the guy a new system.) The drive itself was still under warranty so I rma'd it to samsung. It was a fast, simple process. And, my grandson has a new 20GB drive in his system. 😀

<< I ended up buying a IBM 120GXP 60.0GB @ 7200 RPM for $99 at Fry's. >>

Man you should have bought the Maxtor, Samsung, WD or any other drive other than that GXP. Make sure you backup your data because the chances are pretty good that with in a year or so that GXP will fail you. I just had a 60 GXP die on me last night taking over 10 gigs of Tagged MP3's with it. It's going to be a long long time before I use an IBM IDE Drive in any of my systems or systems I build for clients and I definately won't be using any GXP models. Any Company that knowingly sells a Flawed Product to their customers won't be getting my business.

Yeah, I heard about the risks with IBM GXP series before I made my purchase. But my 75GXP 45gb has served me well. ::Knock on wood;;. And I heard that hdd cooling can help the life span of any 7200RPM hdd if I decide I need the extra insurance.

News update: I just got the 20GB replacement drive from Samsung now. Their RMA replacement process seems pretty painless too. Time to test it now.🙂

I've had a 20GB 5400rpm Samsung drive running in my system as my main drive for about a year now... my system runs 24/7 and it's been really good to me.
It's quiet. doesn't get hot, probably because it's only a 5400rpm drive.

I would say that it's a very good drive for those on a tight budget. I'm not saying that there aren't better deals out there... but at the time I jipped this out of a refurbished emachine... the drive has been good to me.

Not to mention... I also dis a lot of divx media manipulating on it too 🙂

I now have a 60GB 7200rpm Maxtor as my main drive and use the samsung for FTP and Misc stuff.

Sweetness,
Mer.

if you're system integrator, you want to make more profit for selling let's say 100 systems to a school or gov, it's good to use samsung hd, it's few bucks cheaper than famous brands, your customers don't care what's inside, even just $1 cheaper, you make $100 more in profit.

if you're end-user, I can't find a reason why you should consider Samsung hd.
it's not much cheaper than famous brands.
it's not having better spec than famous brands.
it's not in the hd business as long time as famous brands.

you can use newegg as a judgement or guideline, do they sell samsung hd? no.

Just finished a full surface test of the drive; it seems to be in fine condition. Might have just been a bad drive; any manufacturer puts out some occasionally. In terms of reliability, I've never had much variation among drive makers. Heck, my sister's still using a 2.5GB JTS Corporation hard drive - they've been out of business for years now. It's not very fast, but it still works. Performance seems to be a big defining factor in terms of price these days.
Well for some reason my mind just shut down, so I think I'll leave it at that. Just a little FYI, this 20GB drive will replace my secondary drive, an 8.4GB Western Digital.
