Opinion on keeping Promise IDE controller w/new motherboard

Hey!

Looking for opinions/facts here. I'm installing an Asus P4P800 Deluxe in an existing system that has a Promise Ultra100 TX2 IDE controller in it. I had purchased the controller some time ago, because the existing mo'board didn't supprt DMA 5 and I wanted maximum performance.

There are 2 drives. one is Ultra DMA 5, the other is Ultra DMA 2 and a CD-Rom. I'd kept the 2 drives on different ports on the controller, and the CD-Rom on one of the motherboard ports. This was because my understanding is that the slower drive will degrade performance of the faster drive if they are on the same port.

So...I'm thinking that for now I should keep the same arrangement with the new Motherboard although it does have support for the DMA 5 and more.

Should I keep the controller in the new setup? Or ditch it and use the native IDE controller on the Mo'board?

What do you think?

I would put the CDROM and the DMA2 on the card on different channels, and put the fast HD on the new motherboard.

thanks for your input!

So since I'm trying to upgrade without re-install, would you upgrade with hardware as is and then reconfigure? Or just go for the change upfront?

What OS ? You are probably going to have to reinstall anyway, but the IDE controllers are the easiest to switch drives around on with creating a problem for the OS. 98 is forgiving on mobo upgrades, 2000 is tricky, and XP is a nightmare. A re-install is allways best.
