Opinion on a 2001 Sentra SE 2.0 ???

The car in question is a 2001 Nissan Sentra SE 2.0 with Performance Package. That gives it 16inch wheels with 6-spoke rims, 2L SR20DE engine (145hp/136tq), 7-speaker 180W soundsystem with subwoofer, LSD <pretty important>, and its gonna be a manual tranny.

Opinions? Critics? I read the Edmunds.com and MotorTrend comparo and the Sentra came out first compared to the Corolla/Civic/etc..

BTW, you know the most expensive Corolla still doesn't come with rear disc brakes? They are drums! And the Corolla is the most expensive out of the bunch!!

Also this Sentra is gonna replace our '91 Corolla.

They're nice cars with nice interiors. The Altima is nice too. The Nissan shifters are a little rubbery, but not that bad. That's the worst thing I can think of right now.

I don't want a current Altima..my family is looking for a small car to replace the Corolla. Except this time we would like air condition, power windows, and other frills like that. <Our Corolla had none of these>

By far it has the best interior and seats of all the compacts I have sat in. Corolla seats are ok, theres something about the new Civic's seats that make it uncomfortabe for me.

Mazda Protege is a very nice car as well. My cousin has one (in automatic) and it is surprisingly well put together for an econobox. But I'd rather have the Sentra cuz it's Nissan. :)

That car's fine and dandy, but I would wait a little longer and get the 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R.

<<
? SE-R Spec V: 180-hp 2.5-liter 16-valve DOHC 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission, helical limited-slip front differential and special sport bucket seats
? SE-R: 170-hp 2.5-liter 16-valve DOHC 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission (4-speed automatic transmission also available)
? Both models feature a sport-style front fascia with mesh grille and large fog lights, body-color lower body side spoilers and rear spoiler and an available 9-speaker (including subwoofer), Rockford Fosgate-powered audio system

Madd Indian, we all know you love Nissan by now, so just buy a Sentra already! ;)

BTW, I drive an '00 Sentra. I comparison shopped the Civic, Corolla/Prizm, Mirage, Protege, Focus etc. (kinda wish I'd looked at the Golf though). I liked the Sentra and the Protege the most. However, the Sentra had much more power and features for the price. I haven't regretted my decision, I have even driven my car cross-country and have had no problems whatsoever.

Ok...don't hurt me...but I'm going to reccomend the Hyundai Elantra GT.

Try beating at least the standard features you get for 14.5k. I won't comment on the brand, but at least give it a chance.

you might consider getting a used maxima with low miles on it. that might not be an option, though

it's a great car for an unbelievable price. Overall great value.

but i'd recommend the SE-R coming out in a couple of months (in the hot yellow color).

Damn straight I love Nissans..but I can't let brand loyalty blind me when it comes to spending $20K CDN on something!!

About the Hynduai: I just don't like their looks..never have. I understand they make great cars in terms of features..but they just don't do it for me..

About the SE-R: As much as I want it, I doubt we will be able to afford it. There will probably be lots of dealer mark-up on it. If its around $25K before taxes, it will probably be $30K in the end, and that's too much for a Sentra.
Plus it may drink a lot of gas also.

About buying a used Maxima: As much as I want to, it would defeat the purpose because it drink to much gas. We are mainly looking for a compact car because of its gas mileage. My dad currently drives 130km everyday for work and he uses the Maxima. The Sentra will be his ride to work. The Max pretty expensive on gas and if someone is willing to buy our Corolla, we might as well spring for a new car. A/C and cd-player would be a nice treat too.

isnt the edmunds.com review based on the 2000 model cars and not 2001? i remember reading them a while back. u should check out the protege, it's gotten more HP since 2000, and its cheaper too, i think that was edmunds biggest problem with it, they cited it as 'expensive and excellent'. and go test drive :)

Ive narrowed down my new car shopping choices to the sentra se or the protege lx with gt package.

The sentra has more power and better performence but it has half the backseat room as the protege. The sentra is tiny! The sentra is really harsh over the bumps.... its way too stiff of a ride.

Well after driving my Corolla for the past 2 years, nothing can be stiffer...NOTHING!

And the Sentra handles too..so I don't really mind the stiff ride. The performance package includes Stage II stocks and struts which gives it the stiff ride and excellent handling!

I just want to know how a Sentra SE compares to a '97 Civic SI <Canadian spec - 127hp> in terms of handling and road feel.

I know its an amazing car...but it comes to freaking $26K CDN with tax!!!!!! The MRSP of $21K doesn't look so cheap anymore!

Damn your 15% tax!! DAMN YOU!
