Opinion needed - Re-install WinXP or go back to Win2K?

Hey guys. Somehow my WinXP got f-ed up. I think that it's due to the drivers from my Hauppauge WinTV card. I know that Win2K is faster for SETI, but I like WinXP's firewall. But I'm not too happy with IE 6.0. I don't like how it screws up tables.

So, what should I do? WinXP or Win2K? I only play games occasionally, so that's not much of a concern.

I personally am very happy with WinXP 🙂

I love the hiding of inactive icons, grouping together of different copies of the same program, and it is pretty stable (but that's cos it's 2000 based not 9x based 🙂)

TBH i didn't notice the difference in Seti times 🙂

I also haven't had any problems with any of the games i play! (CS, MOH:AA, RTCW)

The only problems are the nVidia and XP nv_disp4.dll errors, but i've only had that 4 times before 🙂

Edit: And XP Pro supports dual CPU as well, that will be on my dualie Celeron 400s when they arrive through the post 🙂

<< I couldn't get XP stable on my new box and put W2K Server on there. Need Server for the dual cpu. >>

Win2k Pro is also dual cpu ready. 😉

I know everyone has definite opinions on the subject, but I absolutely love WinXP. Best OS I've ever used. 🙂

I put it on one box to see if I would like it.
It solved some registry problems that W2K had but it completely wrecked Office2K on that box. Can't uninstall, can't reinstall and it just does not work. You try to start Word and it goes through the Install process and then will not start. Now I will probably have to format the drive and start from scratch.

I feel the same way. I am more than happy with XP.

I also really like Win Xp Pro! I have it on 5 systems and they all run great. I did take it off of a 6th system due to it craching in 3D games. I think it was due to the sound card, but have not confirmed that. I wiped the drive and went back to Win98SE, the system is fine now.

I couldn't get XP to access my SCSI devices correcty and my friend couldn't even get it install his SCSI card right. You know something is wrong with the OS when it won't let you uninstall IE6 and replace it with IE5.5. In my oppinion the IE issue is enough that we should all boycot XP.:|

Started to install that and got some screen asking me what type of PC I had. I guess it detected the 2nd cpu and didn't know what to do. And I didn't know what to tell it.

😕

I'll give WinXP one more try. If not, I'll be going back to Win2k since I never had any problems with it. Thanks guys.

You could always go back to WinME. 😛

😉😉

Haven't used WinXP Pro, but I really like Win2KPro. 😀

My main PC at home has been extremely stable once I went to Win2KPro and switched from Abit BH6/Cely466/ATI Rage to AMD Duron650@850/NVidia GeForce 256. I never have to reboot the PC now (unless I'm in piddlefarting around with stuff 😉) or doing the weekly MS security patches.

I personally love WinXP Pro. I haven't had a spec of trouble. I run the entire Office 2K suite without any problems, too. The extremely quick shutdown and startup times are great and it completely alleviated the delay problem with M$ lookOut and Seti that was so aggravating in Win2k.

I personally love Win2kPro, too.

PS - I'm having a few arguments with RedHat Linux 7.2, though. Unfortunately, it's winning. :|

LOL! 😀

I always loved DanC's analogy of learning Linux. He said it was like putting on women's pantyhose. Just kinda "icky". 😉😉

(or something like that)

I've never known a M$ os where you could do that...2K came w 5.01 and if you tried to put 5.0 on it you would hose everything all up. The OS is built around IE6 and allowing you to put 5.5 on there would require major changes to the OS for the .001% of the users that would need to do it.

While I'm on the subject, I found out the other day that IE6 gets around the version of Websense that we're using at work and allows you around it's content monitoring. 🙂

My vote is for XP but for God's sake change the theme/skin back to the old way. The colors kill me.

I use the "Silver" theme, and i love it, you even get used to the green start menu! It looks so much better than the green or blue!

Love WinXP, probably the best Windows OS so far :Q

Never tried XP but a friend has it at work and really likes it. W2K Pro works very well for me. 😛 My work machine never goes down unless I want to change something. I am getting to the point with that machine where I am not going to be changing anything for a long time, just because it works so well. 🙂

Sounds like you may not have had the 1-2 cpu version of W2K, I have one of those disks and tried it on my 694D and got the very same screen. I ended up swapping install disks with my home machine (Single cpu). The disk will say right on it 1-2 cpu version in the same area that they put the "Do Not Make Illegal Copies of This Disk"

I am not certain exactly why these disks are out there, anybody know?? (The non-multiple cpu disks.. ) With the exception of the 1-2 cpu version logo it looks identical and installs just fine on a single cpu machine.

Anyway to answer your question?? I am sticking with W2K Pro, IE6 doesn't impress me.

I have Win 2k pro one pc and Xppro on the other here at home and did not have any problems with any, except for
getting my Frigging IBM Ideascn 2000 to work. IBM sells stuff and doesn't support it when they put out a new version !!!🙁

Had to get drivers from Primax to get it to work!!

Otherwise no trouble whatsoever!!

They were both clean installs!!
