I don't see how it's possible to create an effective vaccine for a virus that mutates as rapidly as COVID-19 does, but I wish them luck.
Coronaviruses mutate at a significantly slower rate than other RNA viruses, like influenza. Coronaviruses are one of the few RNA viruses to encode a proofreading mechanism that significantly drops the rate of mutation, so we are less likely to see genetic drift as what is observed with influenza. While there have been some genetic variants identified in the SARS-CoV-2 isolates over time, it appears these would be unlikely to alter the key targets being used as vaccine candidates.

Any vaccine created after 11/3 is likely of no interest to Trump whatsoever.
Well actually it is, if one of his billionaire pals can sell that vaccine for a thousand bucks a shot. After all, at least half the reason these guys are in on it is to make each other richer.

It's a little different with Dumpy admittedly, because he's a megalomaniacal narcissist with delusions of grandeur who gets off of people addressing him as "Mr. President" and saluting him as soon as he shows his orange ham-face, but one can't just ignore the grifting angle either. Him spending two out of every seven days at one of his own golf resorts or other before this corona thing hit isn't a coincidence.

Meh. A virus has to mutate in a way that changes its surface proteins to avoid attack from a primed immune system. While covid-19 has shown some mutations it hasn't appreciably changed those proteins & may not retain the ability to enter cells if it does.

True. I would also predict that Trump will brag about a vaccine near election time, falsely claiming that one which is still in clinical trials - perhaps with "encouraging results so far" - has already been developed, and take total credit.

I don't see what they can do to speed devlopment; multiple candidates are already in clinic. Nkw we just have to wait for the data, and companies have to scale production.

seems like the Gov is ready to buy mass amounts of several potential vaccines, basically there will be and could be now multiple different vaccines in production and any that don’t work will be tossed. Idea is to produce them before the testing is completed so the successful vaccines can immediately be deployed.
more or less what I heard on some news show.

None of which matters at all between now & the election & probably not significantly over the next year. There's a lot of sickness, death & economic hardship looming in front of us. Once it gets out of hand, which it likely will, there's no stopping this thing. That's just the nature of it. There's no "safe" way to reopen the economy & Trump is incapable of finding it if there were.

Cherish your vulnerable loved ones & tell them you love them while you still can. Or just go to the bar & get hammered every night so you can catch it, spread it around & get it over with. It's a viable strategy for people who don't give a fuck. It'll work for the vast majority.

Have they put Baron in charge of it yet? Will the cyber help?

I read that today...

I have put my 14 year old son, Barron, in charge of Warp Speed. He is tremendously intelligent, he takes after his stable genius father. He will come up with a beautiful plan that provides a covid-19 vaccine to everyone in the US by the end of the year.
