Operation Time Out Message

Every once and a while I will get that message from microsoft IE7 and its when I am trying to download something and I can usually only fix it by resetting my or rebooting my modem and router. Is there any reason for this or explanation?

I get that sometime too. Sometimes it's my router and sometimes it's my modem. Router and modem have operating system in order to do their jobs. Some Linksys router runs a version of Linux that you can get a hack for. Therefore, the problem is probably caused by an unrecoverable error, similar to a kernel panic or a blue screen of death. Another thing that I'm thinking is that the router could be detecting a hacking attempt and shut itself down in order to save the network.

I am having that issue again with the timed out operation. I was trying to download drivers from a gateway site and sony site for a desktop and notebook. The download windows come up but they dnt get that far before they time out because I guess they cant get a connection and I know that if I reset the router like unplug it and the cable modem it will work fine after but after time goes by and not that much time like a week or so and it starts to happen again. I have other computers connected to the router through a switch and they cant get the downloads either. Its not the switches because i first tried the computer thats connected directly to the router. Now I was wondering if it was the ips feature in my router the model is WRVS4400N.

It's probably just your provider or you experiencing high packet loss. Give the ISP a call. It only takes 3-4 packets being lost for a timeout.

You can try "ping www.google.com -t" and have that continuously pinging and if you get periods of 30-45 seconds of loss that's enough to get a timeout.

I have the latest firmware and i did the factory defaults many times. I did the ping test and there were no packet losses but the average times were between 30 and 40. So what should I do in that case? I have comcast for an isp btw.
